Mandatory Reporting of Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect
RCW Chapter 26.44 was expanded to inlude employees of higher education as mandatory reporters. For more information, please read the Administrative Policy Statement and Minors at the UW.
The University requires a background check for all employees (staff and faculty) being hired into a safety/security-sensitive position or those that are subject to the Washington State Child And Adult Abuse Law (CAAL). CAAL covers those who "will or may have unsupervised access" to special populations including: children under 16 years of age; developmentally disabled adults; or vulnerable adults. The University has identified academic units where these positions most reside. To this end, effective July 1, 2013 all new faculty (full-time and part-time) being hired into the Education, Nursing, or Social Work Programs must pass a backround check prior to employment. For all other units, it is the dean/director's responsibility to determine if a new faculty will be working with any of the above populations and, therefore, require a background check.
