UW TACOMA STYLE GUIDE

The University of Washington Tacoma follows the AP (Associated Press) Style Manual. Some of the most commonly used (and misused) words and phrases, along with UW Tacoma-specific issues are listed here. If you have questions about writing style, contact Jill Carnell Danseco.

academic programs
Uppercase when used as a proper noun ("Nursing Program"), but "the program". Do not use "Program of..."
adviser/advisor
Both are correct, but UW Tacoma uses "adviser"
ampersands (&)
Avoid using ampersands when writing out program names: "Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences," "Computing and Software Systems"
branch campus
Avoid using the term "branch campus" when talking about UW Tacoma. Just say "Tacoma campus." Please note that "campus" is not part of our official name and, therefore, is never capitalized ("University of Washington Tacoma campus").
decades and centuries
Time periods do not need apostrophes. For example: the 1860s (not "the 1860's") or the '50s (not "the '50's"). The apostrophe is only needed when talking about a specific event in a specific year: "in 1996's presidential election."
e-mail
Always hyphenate.
freshman/freshmen
When used as a noun ("Apply to be a freshman" or "UW Tacoma will be admitting freshmen in 2006") , "freshman" is singular and "freshmen" is the plural. When used as an adjective ("the freshman curriculum") it is always "freshman." Where possible, it is preferable to use "first-year students" instead.
fundraising
Always one word, never hyphenated.
healthcare
Always one word, never hyphenated.
online
No hyphen.
Ph.D.
When referring to someone with a doctorate, you can use either "Dr. Jane Smith" or "Jane Smith, Ph.D." Using both in the same reference ("Dr. Jane Smith, Ph.D.") is redundant and should not be done.
pre-major
Always hyphenated. Never capitalized unless it starts a sentence.
Terrain (newsletter)
Our alumni/community newsletter is just "Terrain," not the "UW Terrain."
TTY/TDD
TTY (TeleType) and TDD (Telecommunications Device for the Deaf) are the same thing—a system that allows people who are hearing-impaired to communicate over the telephone. In print references, use "TTY." UW Tacoma's TTY number is (253) 692-4413.
University of Washington Tacoma
Never use a hyphen or dash ("University of Washington-Tacoma"). The University's official style no longer uses a comma. Avoid using "UWT" except in internal documentation; use "UW Tacoma."
UW campuses
Use "University of Washington" when referring to the university as a whole or in a statement that applies to all three campuses. When referring to the Seattle or Bothell campuses, you may use "University of Washington Seattle"/"University of Washington Bothell" or "UW Seattle"/"UW Bothell". Avoid using "UWS" or "UWB" in any external documents.
website
One word; all lowercase. Also, note that "World Wide Web" is always capitalized. However, "webmaster" and "webcast" are not capitalized.
