Sam Chung, Ph.D.

Associate Professor
Institute of Technology

Sam Chung

Professor Chung uses the "2 Minute Note" to investigate how well students understand important concepts presented during a class period, and to improve instruction in the succeeding class by making any modifications or clarifications for students in his presentation of course materials.

At the beginning of every class, student groups (groups of three) are asked, to respond to four short answer questions. They take a minute or two to write a response. He then collects them, reflects upon them, notes emergent themes, and formulates adjustments for the next class. He is very careful to acknowledge and address students feedback, to show that he values their comments, promptly in the next class, even if he does not implement any specific change. They become a natural apart of the class, and so integrate assessment with instruction.

  • Takes limited class time and little preparation time; analysis can be done quickly.
  • Simple, direct, and versatile; useable in any class at any level.
  • Provides focused formative feedback.
  • Demands that students reflect upon their learning and listen actively.
  • Low tech (could be with technology such as Blackboard or Catalyst) and low cost!
