Sandbox: Wikis

Examples of Wikis in Higher Education

Case Wiki (Case Western Reserve University) Built in MediaWiki, the same tool that powers Wikipedia, this appears to be the only wiki experiment that's being spearheaded by university staff as opposed to students. Its organizers in the Case Western IT Department describe it as providing a "central information repository for all things related to the University" -- an alternative to Google searching that will take people directly to information theyh're looking for.

Washington State University's Launched Aug 2005 using MediaWiki engine. It bills itself as "a site for WSU students, faculty, and staff to collaboratively develop documents....WSU Wiki is provided by WSU's Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology in the hope that it will facilitate beneficial interactions among members of our academic community wherever there are common interests, within and across course, program, and discipline boundaries."

JhuWiki (Johns Hopkins University). Also built in MediaWiki, this is a student-run wiki that, according to its founder, aims at enabling Hopkins students share information about off-campus events and resources. Recent postings, for example, include tips for using the Chinatown bus between New York and Baltimore and a description of types of fare that are available at an Indian market in Baltimore.

WikiPaltz (SUNY New Paltz). This appears to be a fairly active student-run wiki that's serving in some respects like a student newspaper. For example, you'll find continuing coverage of student protests against the administration's handling of planning for a new student activities center -- a story that was also posted in Wikinews.

UMassWiki (University of Massachusetts) Launched in August, 2005, UMassWiki makes a point of stating it is not an official publication of UMass Amherst and provided free of charge by a student-run business called Smart Cat Media.

OberWiki (Oberlin College). From the site: "OberWiki was started by Xander Quine in August 2004 as a place to organize answers to frequently asked questions from LiveJournal. Since then, it has evolved into a place to collect facts, opinions, and thoughts about all aspects of Oberlin."

DavisWiki (UC Davis). From the site: "This project is an interconnected community effort to explore, discuss and compile anything and everything about Davis - especially the little, enjoyable things."

University of Calgary Wiki This is a wiki to provide collaborative content management in the context of teaching and learning to the University of Calgary community.
