Honors

Quarterly Dean's List

The quarterly high scholarship listexternal UW Web site includes the names of matriculated students who have attained a quarterly grade point average of 3.50 for at least 12 graded credits. Notation of high scholarship is made on the student's permanent academic record. More information about the Dean's list is available in the UWT Catalog.

Graduating with Honors

Baccalaureate honors (cum laude, summa cum laude, and magna cum laude) are awarded only to the recipients of a first baccalaureate degree. Students must complete no fewer than 90 residence credits at UW to be awarded baccalaureate honors. At least 60 of the 90 credits must have been acquired on a graded basis. The University's Honors Committee determines annually the grade-point requirement for each baccalaureate honor. In recent years, approximately 10 percent of the students have been awarded baccalaureate honors. Credits earned by extension courses are not counted toward honors eligibility. For further information on honors thresholds, check with your Business adviser. Students with baccalaureate honors wear golden cords at commencement.

Faculty honors are awarded to those students who have met the GPA criteria for baccalaureate honors (cum laude or higher), but who have fewer than 90 credits in residence at UW. Students with faculty honors wear purple cords at commencement.

Honorary Societies

Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS)

Beta Gamma Sigmaexternal Web site is an honor society for collegiate schools of Business. BGS was founded as a national organization in 1913. Membership in BGS is the highest national recognition a student can receive in an undergraduate or graduate program in business or management accredited by the AACSBexternal Web site. To be eligible for membership in BGS at the University of Washington, Tacoma, a student must rank in the upper 10 percent of the senior class. Students are initiated into BGS by faculty and publicly recognized during the spring term of their senior year at UWT. Membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is a signal honor carrying lifetime affiliations with other outstanding graduates of business schools. While almost 300,000 students receive bachelor or graduate degrees in business each year, only about 15,000 students are elected to membership in BGS. Members of BGS wear colored cords with their academic regalia at UWT commencement ceremonies.
