MBA: FAQ for current MBA students
Common Questions about the MBA Program
- How long do I have to complete my master's degree?
- The Graduate School allows students a maximum of 6 years to complete a master's degree.
- Where do I find information such as my posted quarterly grades?
- Each MBA student has a conveniently located personal Web page called MyUW where you will see your transcript in progress, including grades, and is where you will register online each quarter. MyUW is a wealth of information for MBAs including graduate student information with links to the UW Graduate School, student personal services, the time schedule for Tacoma and Seattle campuses, academic planning tools and information, and much more.
- I work for the State of Washington. Can I use my tuition exemption for the Milgard School of Business MBA Program?
- Eligible University and State of Washington employees may enroll for and receive a tuition exemption for up to six credits each quarter, provided they enroll on a space-available basis. The Milgard School of Business MBA Program is a growing program and likely will not be able to offer tuition exemption opportunities as classes may fill with tuition paying MBAs.
- My work often requires that I be out of town for extended periods. Can I take a quarter off when needed?
- A requirement of the UW Graduate School is that all matriculated graduate students must maintain continuous enrollment (excluding summers) in order to maintain their graduate student status. On special occasions, an exception to this rule may be granted by petition (Graduate On-Leave Status). If you take a quarter off without going on leave, you must re-apply for admission. You are encouraged to carefully consider the required time commitment when applying to the program.
The MBA curriculum is structured for summertime class attendance in order to complete the program in 2 years. Your MBA Adviser will work closely with you to develop a personal plan that extends beyond two years if you need extra time to complete the MBA degree. It is important to carefully consider the class sequencing when taking a quarter or more off using the On-Leave status. - My work demands have changed since I began the MBA Program. How do I extend to 3 or more years to complete my MBA?
- Make an appointment with the MBA adviser to discuss your options and work together to arrive at an extended plan that fits with your new work schedule.
- How do I receive my master's degree diploma?
- MBAs must apply for their master's degree on-line at the Graduate School Web site and have completed the requirements of the Graduate School and the Milgard School of Business MBA Program. MBAs must be registered for a minimum of 2 credits at UW Tacoma for the quarter in which they expect to graduate.
