Winter 2009

UW 5th Annual Financial Reporting Conference hosted in Tacoma
The UW Tacoma and Seattle Business Schools partner to host the Financial Reporting Conference for the fifth year. This year, the event will be held at the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center on May 15, 2009. The conference brings togther accounting standard setters, enforcement officials, and professional and academic accountants to discuss current issues in financial accounting.
8th Annual Business Leadership Recipients Selected
On April 29, 2009, four members of the South Sound Business community will be recogniz for their contributions, not only to their company but thee community at large. James Milgard will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. CEO and Director of Roman Meal Company, William Matthaei, will be honored with the Business Leader of the Year Award. The Small Business Leader of the Year is Brian Forth, President and Founder of SiteCrafting, Inc. David Ottey, Former Director of Emergency Food Network, will be honored with Non-Profit Business Leader of the Year.

This newsletter highlights previous and upcoming events of the Business School, recognizes our donors, and highlights the work of faculty, staff and students.

Autumn 2008

Milgard School of Business offers new Non-Profit Governance Courses
This two-course series partners students and non-profit boards to provide experiential learning for the students. In winter quarter, students will be paired with a non-profit organization board, attend board meetings and reconnect in the classroom to discuss the experience. In spring, students take those experiences and delve into the academics of participating in the non-profit board structure. This course series was developed by the Center for Leadership and Social Responsibility.
Center for Leadership and Social Responsibility hosts Professionalism Week
This year, the Center will host a Professionalism Week with several workshops that culminate in the annual Etiquette Dinner. Workshop topics this year include professionalism and workplace etiquette and how to dress for success. Tickets for the Etiquette Dinner can be purchase at the Milgard School of Business office in Dougan 401.
Milgard School of Business Welcomes New Faculty
Two new faculty join the Milgard School of Business in Autumn 2008 bringing a combined wealth of experience. Though each faculty member's bakcground varies, their collective knowledge will support the continued growth of this school. We are proud to have Altaf Merchant - Assistant Professor in Marketing and Bombie Salvador- Assistant Professor in Management join our school.

4th Annual Financial Reporting Conference
This conference, held on May 16, 2008 and jointly hosted by the UW Tacoma Milgard School of Business and UW Seattle Foster School of Business, brings together accounting standard setters, enforcement officials, corporate financial executives, and professional and academic accountants to discuss current issues in financial accounting and corporate reporting. The format is an open one so that conference participants can interact with the speakers and panelists.
7th Annual Business Leadership Award Dinner
Three South Sound business leaders were recognized on April 30, 2008 for their contributions to both their business and the community.
CLSR Student Case Competition
The Center for Leadership and Social Responsibility is hosting the Second Annual Student Case Competition. The competition will start at 1:00pm on Friday, April 11 in Dougan 160.
Corporate Social Responsibility Forum Open to Public
Speakers from Microsoft and Starbucks explain how social responsibility affects the "triple bottom line" on Tuesday, April 15 at 12:45 p.m. at the Washington State History Museum's Mt. Tahoma Auditorium.
Course Development Grants Offered
The Center for Leadership and Social Responsibility is offering grants to UW Tacoma faculty to incorporate coursework that helps develop socially responsible leaders.

Gary Milgard leaves legacy of ethical leadership
Gary Milgard, the Tacoma manufacturing entrepreneur whose business leadership and commitment to other human beings transformed a tiny, family glass operation into one of the Northwest's most phenomenal success stories-Milgard Manufacturing-died Wednesday morning, July 13. Born Gary Eugene Milgard at Tacoma General Hospital Nov. 6, 1936, he was 68 at his death.

Business Faculty Member Awarded Prestigious Grant
Dr. Jill Purdy has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture and research in Iceland in Autumn 2005. She will teach a course in cross-cultural negotiation at the Bifrost School of Business and conduct research on how culture influences business and government negotiations in Iceland.

Dr. Saudagaran awarded Outstanding International Accounting Educator
Dr. Shahrokh Saudagaran, Dean of the Milgard School of Business at the University of Washington, Tacoma, received the American Accounting Association'sexternal Web site (AAA) Outstanding International Accounting Educator Award at its annual meeting in Orlando, Florida in August. This is a prestigious award. Past recipients have included prominent accounting academics from U.S. universities as well as universities in Australia and Europe. With this recognition, Dr. Saudagaran becomes the first person to receive the AAA International Accounting Section's Outstanding Dissertation Award (1987) and its Outstanding Educator of the Year Award (2004).
Saudagaran Begins as Milgard's First Dean
Shahrokh M. Saudagaran, Ph.D. assumed the position of Dean of the Milgard School of Business on July 1, 2004.
