MBA: How to Apply
Complete the online Application to the University of Washington Graduate School that includes the Milgard School of Business MBA Program application materials. A $65.00 application fee applies. The fee is paid online using MasterCard or Visa credit or debit cards.
List your GMAT score if you have taken the test or list the test date if scheduled and be sure to have the official scores sent to UW Tacoma, Part-time MBA program.
Instructions on required supplemental application materials
- Resume
- Your resume, submitted online in plain text, or uploaded in Word or PDF, should include the following:
- All managerial and professional work experience since graduating from high school
- Any relevant community and/or extracurricular activities
- Any awards, honors, or other forms of recognition (academic, community, military, etc.) earned
- Management and Professional Work Experience Summary
- Complete the online Management and Professional Work Experience Summary (PDF) that includes the following categories, with years of work expressed in years and rounded up to the nearest half year.
- Management: Defined as direct responsibility for the assets of an organization; supervision of two or more people (e.g., manager, executive leader, team leader, group/project coordinator, etc.); special projects; processes; databases; budgets, etc.
- Professional: Requires professional expertise in business functions such as sales, accounting, human resources, finance, marketing, operations, etc. and/or technical functions such as engineering, research, logistics, computer programming, sciences, etc.
- Note: The online Management and Professional Work Experience Summary PDF is in Acrobat 8.0. Applicants may use Acrobat 7.0 or 8.0 to save it into the application materials. Acrobat 7.0 is a free download available through the online application process.
- Admission Essay
- All applicants must submit one required essay online in plain text, or uploaded in Word or PDF in one paginated document using a minimum font size of 11. An opportunity is provided to include an optional essay.
- The required essay is to address the following topic:
Describe your career goals and explain how an MBA from UW Tacoma will help you accomplish these goals. (750 words maximum) - For the optional essay:
Use this essay to include any other information you believe would be helpful to the Admissions Committee in considering your application (250 words maximum) and uploaded in Word or PDF in one paginated document using a minimum font size of 11. - Professional Letters of Recommendation
- Two letters of recommendation (PDF) are required from individuals who are familiar with your work experience and professional achievements as well as managerial potential. These professional recommendations should be completed by your employer or supervisor. Personal or academic recommendations will not be considered.
- The letters of recommendation are submitted online as part of the Milgard School of Business MBA application materials, and you will need to provide the name of each recommender (2), company, title, phone number and e-mail address. An e-mail goes out to the recommenders requesting each to complete the processional letter of recommendation online. Once the recommenders complete and submit the online letter, you (the applicant) are notified by e-mail. Suggestion: Inform your recommenders in advance that the e-mail with the recommendation link is on its way and inform them of your timelines for completing the application.
- Applicant Survey
- Complete the Applicant Survey as part of the required application to the Milgard School of Business MBA Program.
- Address for transcripts to the Milgard School of Business MBA Program
- Official transcripts in sealed envelopes with the school registrar's signature across the seal (1 copy from each institution attended including post-graduate courses taken after college) are required as part of the application process. Each transcript must have a degree conferred and diploma date on it to be official. If your transcript does not indicate this information, you will need to provide an official copy of your diploma or other document indicating date and conferral of your degree.
- Without transcripts and required materials, your application is considered incomplete and will not be reviewed until all materials are received.
- DO NOT OPEN SEALED TRANSCRIPT ENVELOPES IF MAILED TO YOU. Opening the envelope causes the transcripts to be considered unofficial and new, sealed copies will be required. Send these transcripts to the address below.
- Some schools will not release official transcripts directly to the applicant. Direct those institutions to mail transcripts to:

- For Milgard School of Business Scholarship consideration for new MBAs only, submit online in plain text, or uploaded in Word or PDF, a personal essay that is one-page, double-spaced, and a minimum font size of 11. Include your full name on the essay and title it "Milgard Scholarship Consideration for New MBAs".
- In the essay, describe your leadership activities and goals in your organization or community and explain how this MBA program will help you accomplish these activities and goals.
- During the application process, you will be able to confirm receipt of your MBA application materials by returning to the Graduate School online application process. All required materials must be received before your application will be evaluated. Decision letters will be mailed beginning in June.
