About the consultants

The design firm of Mithun has been retained through a competitive bid process to support the process of the Master Plan Update.

Founded in 1949, Mithun has grown to more than 200 individuals providing a unique blend of disciplines including master planning, architecture, landscape architecture and interior design. Mithun has become a recognized leader in campus planning and design. To each project, Mithun brings a collaborative approach that is tailored to the unique needs and characteristics of each institution to support the mission, promote excellence in education delivery and strengthen the sense of community. Always looking toward the future, Mithun is nationally recognized for sustainable design and advocacy. Mithun's work demonstrates a passion to create innovative learning environments, sustainable strategies, and a high sense of quality and social responsibility.

Lee Copeland, FAIA / Consulting Principal, Mithun; Architectural Advisor, University of Washington   
As a nationally recognized urban designer, Lee Copeland has been responsible for influencing and shaping campuses and civic places throughout the country. A former dean and professor of architecture and planning at two prestigious universities, he shaped the core curriculum for urban designers as a powerful organizational leader for colleagues and students. His insightful work honors cities and their inhabitants as they live, learn, and thrive. Lee is a recipient of the Topaz Medallion in 2001 from the American Institute of Architects and Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture for cumulative contributions to architecture and education as well as a recipient of the Seattle Medal in 2000 that recognizes distinguished lifetime achievement in architecture and service from the American Institute of Architects.
 
Brodie Bain, AIA, AICP, LEED® AP / Principal
Brodie Bain has 19  years experience as an architect and planner with a focus on campus planning, programming and pre-design.  For the past  12 years Brodie, has focused almost exclusively on higher education .  Her career has been strongly influenced by a passion  for supporting an institution’s mission and for design/behavior studies. As master planner, programmer or architect, understanding the user experience is always at the forefront. Her approach to programming stems from a talent for listening to users and translating their needs into workable spaces.  Brodie’s master plans include physical solutions that tie open space, connections and  context to building function, placement, image.  Where appropriate Brodie will develop a detailed capital plan that suports the institution's long term vision.  Much of Brodie's work has included consensus building with stakeholders and public process.
 
Jeffrey Benesi / Senior Associate, Urban Planning
Jeff has over 30 years of experience creating livable cities through functional streetscapes and inviting spaces. His clients become his teammates as they interactively work together identifying issues and crafting design solutions. Jeff’s passion in landscape architecture, land use planning, and urban design is evident in his broad portfolio of work from transit oriented developments and parks to large master planning projects. Jeff is a natural educator and artist. He uses these skills to successfully convey conceptual ideas and technical details to all those involved. Working collaboratively with stakeholders, Jeff creates solutions that integrate the client and community vision into every project.
 
Elisabeth Goldstein, LEED® AP / Planner & Programmer
Elisabeth has worked with a number of post-secondary institutions on their  master  plans, as well as new construction and renovation projects for student housing, academic buildings, and student service spaces.  Her experience as an accessibility designer and management consultant has made Elisabeth keenly aware of the importance of understanding each client’s unique needs and requirements to achieve the best design solutions.
