Campus Master Plan 2008 Update:
Topics of discussion
Several issues emerge repeatedly in conversations about the future of the UW Tacoma campus. The Master Plan Update project team is in process of capturing these reoccurring topics. In addition, input is being considered regarding the overall “character” of the campus and how it will interact with the surrounding urban community
UW Tacoma and Mithun are documenting trends in discussions about the UW Tacoma Master Plan, focusing on issues internal to the campus as well as those affecting the surrounding community. These trends are the basis of further discussion on the use of the physical campus. Discussions with various groups are documented in notes posted on the "How to get involved" page, that provides a way to follow the dialogue on these and other issues.
The most prevalent topics are listed below:
- Idealized vision for campus facilities
- Implementation of campus housing and campus life for students
- Recreation space, particularly for students
- Physical space to facilitate teaching and learning
- Facilities needed for growth of academic programs
- Flow of movement across campus and within buildings
- Mixed use of campus buildings and space (e.g., retail, student activities, recreation, classrooms, labs, etc.)
- Open space: garden and natural landscapes, lawn, recreational activities
- Traffic and pedestrian traffic circulation within and through the campus
- Challenges that Market Street and other streets bring to traffic and pedestrian patterns in and around the campus
- Future building locations
- Parking
- Transit, including streetcars and light rail
- Use of land before it is developed into university buildings
- Retail and restaurants on campus
- Campus edges
- Determine if property outside the 46-acre footprint will be required to reach enrollment goal of 10,000 students.
As the project team continues through the planning process, these topics will continue to evolve. This is a work in progress; comments and questions are welcome. You can follow what is documented from meetings and events through notes posted on the Documents, Maps & Events page. This is a work in progress; comments and questions are welcome. Please e-mail the UW Tacoma Master Plan Update project team with comments or suggestions. It is important to indicate whether you are focusing on the near-term—within a 10-year horizon—or the long-term build-out of the campus footprint.
