Campus Master Plan 2008 Update:
Overview and Guiding Principles
The University of Washington Tacoma is engaged in a process to update the Master Plan for developing its 46-acre campus in response to recent changes in UW Tacoma’s mission and ongoing changes in the surrounding urban setting.Although a full review of the Master Plan was completed in 2003, the recent addition of freshmen and sophomores to the UW Tacoma’s transfer and graduate student population requires careful evaluation of the plan.
Key issues involved with transforming UW Tacoma into a four-year campus include demand for residence halls and other student spaces required to support a residential population, such as a student center and space for recreation and specialized support services. Changes and additions to academic offerings to serve an expanded mix of students will be evaluated.
Guiding principles have been developed for the master plan update process that were informed by UW Tacoma’s mission and vision and the values identified in the strategic planning process.
Once needs are identified, including determining what activities and services need to be offered within close proximity to others, the existing physical layout of the Master Plan will be reviewed and revised accordingly.
In addition, local and regional transportation initiatives continue to affect the flow of vehicle and pedestrian traffic through and around campus, as do development of properties near the campus. The Master Plan Update process will further evaluate these changes and their potential impact over the next decade.
Recommendations will be focused both on a near-term, 10-year horizon and on a long-term vision for the full build-out of the campus footprint.
The University’s process coincides with the City of Tacoma’s process to update development plans for downtown, providing an opportunity to integrate the plans. UW Tacoma will seek official support from the Tacoma City Council for its plan at the end of the process.
