Autumn 2008

Information Session on Nonprofit Governance courses
Held on Wednesday, October 22 at 12:30 to 1:25 in Dougan 201, this information session will explain the new two-course sequence classes being offered during winter and spring quarter called Nonprofit Governance. The courses will introduce students to board membership and governance through an apprenticeship. Each student is matched with a nonprofit organization where the student serves as an apprentice board member, with a regular board member serving as a mentor. Professionalism Week and 6th Annual Etiquette Dinner
Ever wonder how to "fit" into the culture at your workplace? Ever been concerned about what attire is appropriate for your work environment or how you can "dress to impress?" How about which fork to use during a meal with your boss or what to do with that butter knife? Get all of these questions answered and more during Professionalism Week, sponsored by the Center for Leadership & Social Responsibility.

Workshop 1: Tuesday, October 28, 12:30 - 1:30 p.m., Dougan 160: Professionalism & Workplace Etiquette. Come listen to the expertise of Ruthanne Reim McCaffree - personal coach, career advisor and owner of Career Management Institute - as she provides recommendations on preseting yourself professionally and methods for integrating into a workplace culture. Not only is the event FREE for UW Tacoma students, there will also be free pizza and prizes (including one-on-one session(s) with Ruthann). RSVP's recommended, as this event will be very popular. E-mail your RSVP to clsr@u.washington.edu.
Workshop 2: Wednesday, October 29, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m., WCG 104: Dressing for Success - Appearance Matters! Employers notice what you wear, but you need to stand out for the right reasons. Our guest speakers will provide advice and recommendations on how to dress to impress without losing your own personal style.
This workshop will also give you tips and tricks on how to get the most "bang" out of your buck to make your wardrobe dazzle! This workshop is FREE for UW Tacoma students. Pizza and prizes too! E-mail your RSVP to clsr@u.washington.edu.
6th Annual Etiquette Dinner: Thursday, October 30, 6:00 p.m., Hotel Murano, Tacoma. Registration is closed for this event. This is an event not to be missed! Mingle with other UW Tacoma students, faculty, staff and local business leaders during a social hour. Then, enjoy a delicious three-course meal while learning important dining etiquette from a dynamic and engaging presenter.
Meet local recruiters and business leaders from companies such as the Russell Investment Group, DaVita, Enterprise, McGladrey & Pullen, State Farm and MultiCare. This event is FUN and an outstanding bargain at $15 per person. Professional/Business attire required.

Corporate Social Responsibility Forum
Tuesday, April 15 from 12:45 p.m to 2:00 p.m. in the Mt. Tahoma Auditorium at the Washington State History Museum. What does "socially responsible" mean, and how do companies apply the concept to their business model? Come hear two leading northwest corporations, Starbucks and Microsoft, explain their views on socially responsible business practices and what that means for the "triple bottom line" of profits, people and planet.

2nd Annual CLSR Student Case CompetitionFirst place case competition team with judges.
This event will test students' abilities to utilize the knowledge gained through their course work at the Milgard School of Business and apply it to a business case that involves the interplay and tension between business strategy and the business' broader societal impact.
Four teams participated this year, analyzing a Havard Business Review case on Starbucks and provided recommendations on their Corporate Social Responsibility strategies. The winning team members, comprised of Sonia Lalchand Chandwaney, Adam R. Wojtanowicz and Ravi Singh Wadan, were each awarded with a $250 Nordstrom gift card. Additionally, they were invited to share their presentation with the Starbucks Corporate Social Responsibility team at the Starbucks corporate headquarters in Seattle.

Lynne Twist, author of The Soul of Money speaks at UW Tacoma
The Center for Leadership & Social Responsibility is sponsoring a free session for college students in the South Sound with well-known author and activist, Lynne Twist, on Thursday, February 28 at 2:30 p.m. in Carwein Auditorium. Twist's message focuses on changing your life and improving your community by taking a stand. She has spent more than 30 years working as a leader in a number of global initiatives, such as the fight against world hunger, protecting rain forests, empowering indigenous people and improving the lives of women and children.
