University of Washington Tacoma Friday, June 12, 2009 Welcome graduates, families and friends to the University of Washington Tacoma Commencement Web site! The University of Washington holds its Commencement ceremony once each year for all students who graduated in the previous Autumn, Winter, Spring or Summer quarters. More information about the 2009 Commencement ceremony will be posted in early 2009.
At Commencement, the University of Washington Tacoma community will gather at the Tacoma Dome to celebrate the academic achievements of the Class of 2009. Faculty, wearing their colorful gowns and hoods, begin the processional by forming an honor guard to greet the graduating students. Dressed in their academic apparel, the degree candidates will enter the Dome’s arena to the cheers and clapping of the faculty and over 6,000 assembled guests, family and friends. The processional continues with the seating of the faculty, followed by the Chancellor’s Party and the President’s Party, who sit on the stage. The ceremony begins with the singing of the National Anthem, and continues with opening remarks by Chancellor Spakes and President Emmert, and includes the presentation of the Chancellor's Medal, a student speaker, and a formal address by our Commencement speaker. The conferring of degrees begins with master’s degree candidates, followed by bachelor's degree candidates. The name of each degree candidate is announced by a faculty reader. All degree candidates will cross the stage and shake hands with the President, Chancellor and the Director or Dean of their academic program. Pictures will be taken when shaking hands with the President. Candidates will receive complimentary purple diploma covers bearing the official seal of the university.
