UWT STUDENT COMPUTER ACCESS ROAD MAP

The policies below, govern UWT student's computer account. You will be held accountable for the use of your account.

Also, all login accounts are subject to rules found at the following web site: http://www.washington.edu/computing/rules/

PASSWORD POLICY

Throughout the year you will be asked to change your password periodically. Please do not share or give out your password.

ACCOUNT DURATION POLICY

At some point in time, your account may either be disabled or deleted. Disabling an account means that you are not able to login to the account, but your old password and personal files are left intact. Deleting an account removes the account from the system, and deletes all files associated with that account.

DELETED ACCOUNTS

Your account will be deleted if you do not register for two consecutive quarters. Since you need to register for a course by the 10th business day of each quarter, this means that your account will be deleted on the 16th calendar day after the beginning of the second unregistered quarter.

Example 1: If you register for the winter quarter, but don't register for both the spring quarter and the summer quarter, your account will be deleted 16 calendar days after the beginning of the summer quarter.

Example 2: If you register for the spring quarter, don't register for the summer quarter, and register for the fall quarter, your account will NOT be deleted (it will be disabled though).

USAGE POLICY

You are responsible for the use of your account; therefore, do not give your password to anybody or let anyone use your account. If you need to share information, there are ways to do this without sharing your account. Also always remember to logout after using UWT computers.

FILE STORAGE POLICY

You are ultimately responsible for making copies of (backing up) any files you create before your account is disabled or deleted.

All files and folders you create should be put on your personal network drive -- the 'H' drive, (your secure personal space) or the 'S' drive (open access collaboration space). You may also use removable media, which you own. Files and folders placed on the 'H:' and 'S:' drives will be backed up by support personnel. Such backups do not last forever -- the availability of files for restoration is subject to time and backup media space. The sooner you notice lost or deleted files or folders the better the chances are we will be able to restore the files or folders. In most cases we will also require a path and file name (the more accurate the better) for file restores. As a precautionary step (and peace of mind) it is suggested that you make periodic copies of your critical files to a removable media of your own. You may ask for assistance on doing this through the computer lab.

The 'H:' drive - your personal, secure, storage space on the UWT servers. This space is restricted to 100MB. If your storage exceeds this limit your account will be disabled, and you will be required to go to the computer lab to re-enable your account and reduce the amount of space used on the UWT servers.

The 'S:' drive - an open access location used to temporarily storing files can be accessed by many users. This location is not secure, and all files in this location are deleted 5 days after the end of every quarter. No recovery options are supported for files left on the 'S:' drive longer than 5 days after the end of the quarter.

NOTE: No files should be placed on the local disk drive (the 'C:' drive). Files placed on the local hard disk will be deleted, and are unrecoverable.
