Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)Wireless network access is available in:
The following will be required to access the wireless network with your personal laptop:
· Application software correctly configured To access sites outside of the UWT you will need to obtain a UW NetId. This can be done at https://uwnetid.washington.edu/newid In addition to the above you will need the following to access local home directories and shares: RFAStudents -- http://www.tacoma.washington.edu/compserv/rfa_student.cfm Faculty/ Staff -- http://www.tacoma.washington.edu/compserv/rfa_fac_staff.cfm Configuring the networking software for personal laptops.Check the following: · Configure your TCP/IP software to use the 802.11g/b hardware (this may look like an "Ethernet" device to the system). · Configure to acquire a TCP/IP address dynamically, via DHCP. · Configure to make connections to "ANY" 802.11 networks available, or specify the "University of Washington Tacoma" network. · Configure to NOT use "WEP" encryption on the wireless connection. Login is not required to use this service unless you want to connect to services or sites outside the UWT network. If you use your browser to connect to a non-UWT Web site, you will automatically be prompted to enter your UW NetID and password. If you are using a non-Web service (e.g., a secure terminal or file transfer tool) to communicate outside the UWT, you must FIRST run a browser and view a Web page outside the UWT to bring up the authentication page. Once you have successfully authenticated you will be able to use services outside the UW for the rest of the day. To access the service you need:· 802.11g/b connectivity hardware correctly installed on your computer (usually a laptop) · Networking software correctly installed on your laptop · Application software that uses the network correctly installed on your
laptop
Once you have the 802.11g/b hardware, follow the vendor's instructions to install it (which is usually just to plug in the card and run an installer program to add software for it). Note: Bluetooth and "2MB" wireless cards are not 802.11g/b compatible and will not work with the wireless installations. |
