Study Skills

Workshops in note-taking, reading, time management and test taking are offered each quarter by the instructional consultants,the lead counselor, and the disabilities support counselor. Study skills workshops are free to students and require no advance registration. The schedule and locations are available by clicking on Study Skills or by viewing the current registration guide.

Student Technology

Thanks to a grant from the Student Technology Fee Committee, the TLC is able to provide training to students regarding computer applications and general computer use. Workshops are taught by members of the SWAT team, and are free of charge to students. Registration is required. The schedule, locations, and registration form are available at Student Technology Training.

Other

Additional workshops on specific academic skills are scheduled in the Center (Key 202) based on need. This fall workshops are offered in Documentation/Preventing Plagiarism and Public Speaking. Workshops are taught by instructional consultants. Workshops are free to students; registration is requested and can be completed by emailing the Center at uwtwrite@u.washington.edu. The schedule is available by clicking on Other above or by viewing it on the TLC bulletin boards (by LIB 222B and in the WCG atrium stairwell.

Student groups, faculty, staff, and programs may request custom workshops, designed and taught to fit specific group training needs.

EFFECTIVE LECTURE NOTE-TAKING
Autumn 2004 Workshops TBA
So much material is covered in each class session: How can you get it all down in your notes? Participants will learn how to make the most of in-class lecture note-taking including deciphering essential content ahead of time and during and after the lecture; the skills of listening; differences in instructor style and focus; knowing when to write and when to just listen; and how to integrate lecture content with assigned written material. Students’ individual questions will be addressed.

HOW TO READ COURSE MATERIAL EFFECTIVELY

How can you decide what is crucial information in a 20-page reading assignment? How do you know what questions to ask? This workshop will focus on strategies for getting the most out of your assigned readings for your courses: how to approach a textbook or article; how to overview for major headings and content; how to find key terms and concepts; and how to write effective notes as you read. Individual students’ questions will be addressed.

TIME MANAGEMENT

How do you meet the conflicting needs of your roles as student, employee, parent, spouse, and child while still doing well in school? This workshop will focus on strategies for more effectively balancing family, work, and school. Resources and referrals will be provided.

TEST PREPARATION AND TEST-TAKING

How can you know what to expect on a test or exam? How can you set yourself up for success? This workshop is designed for people who want to become more proficient at studying for and taking in-class and take-home exams. Topics to be covered include how to approach written study materials and in-class lecture notes; how to prepare for exams over the weeks of a course; how to read an exam for essential content; how to approach true-false, multiple choice, short answer, and essay questions; and how to better deal with test anxiety. Resources and referrals will be given.

THESE FOUR NON-CREDIT WORKSHOPS ARE FREE TO UWT STUDENTS AND ARE CO-SPONSORED BY THE TEACHING AND LEARNING CENTER (TLC), THE STUDENT COUNSELING CENTER (SCC), AND DISABILITY SUPPORT SERVICES (DSS).
