Verbal Assistance

 

Writing

We provide:

  • one-on-one conferences with a consultant;
  • on-line consultation;
  • objective feedback on drafts;
  • assistance with writing styles such as MLA, APA, IEEE, ASE and AP;
  • help with developing successful writing strategies;
  • idea development;
  • tools and resources.

Reading

We provide:

  • help outlining before you read;
  • techniques for approaching large amounts of reading;
  • guidance on adjusting speed to content;
  • aid in deciphering order and syntax;
  • strategies for working with difficult text;
  • methods for finding meaning;
  • help with style and documentation;
  • advice on reading charts, graphs, figures, tables, illustrations, and captions;
  • tools and resources.

Public Speaking

We provide:

  • objective feedback on individual and group presentations;
  • help with style and documentation;
  • guidance re. public speaking criteria and methods;
  • aid in translating a paper or research into an effective presentation;
  • advice on using visual aids; PowerPoint and other media or computer applications effectively.

Students can receive verbal assistance (writing, reading, public speaking) in three ways: in-person conferences during center hours, on-line conferences and phone conferences. Click here to get more information.


Math, Statistics & Science Assistance

We provide:

  • review of mathematical knowledge that is expected from students coming to UWT;
  • help with courses at UWT in mathematics, statistics & science;
  • support in using math & stats software and calculators;
  • help with how to study math, statistics & science.

Students can receive the math, statistics and science assistance through one-on-one consultation, a group consultation or by attending a workshop. For the one-on-one consultation students may walk-in to TLC during Math hours.


Learning Strategies

We provide:

  • active listening training;
  • exam preparation techniques (in-class & take home);
  • facilitation guidance for group work;
  • note-taking tips;
  • outlining methods;
  • help with brainstorming key words for search strategies;
  • self evaluation tools for self-care, stress levels, & time management;
  • study group guidance.

Students can receive help with learning strategies by making an in-person appointment during Center hours.

 

 

Phone Conferences (Writing only)

We are happy to meet with you during our regular hours by phone.

  • At least 24 hours in advance, please sign up for a half hour appointment at www.washington.edu/tlc/ (no one hour appointments) with a writing consultant.
  • Thirty mintues maxium for a phone appointment is allowed per day.
  • Be sure to include an area code and phone number for appointment. (Please do not schedule an appointment for when you are in a moving vehicle.)
  • Call the TLC front desk (253-692-4417) and leave a message for the consultant with whom you are scheduled for the phone consultation, as to the time and date of the consultation.
  • E-mail your paper using your UW e-mail account to uwtwrite@u.washington.edu at least 12 hours before the appointment. Your paper should be sent as a Word attachment. In the subject line, write: PHONE CONSULTATION for (name of consultant).
  • The consultant WILL CALL YOU within a few minutes of the scheduled time.
  • Please have a copy of your paper in front of you and have thought through what you would like to focus on for the 1/2 hour.

Note: Phone conferences should be reserved only by those at a great distance or with other special needs. Face-to-face conferences and e-mail conferences are preferable. (E-mail conferences are on a first come, first served basis.)
