Symposium on Contemporary Native American Issues in Higher Education

Native students and their families and teachers are invited to visit the campus and join University of Washington Tacoma faculty, staff and students to engage in cross-cultural discussions about what it takes to become a successful college student, including pre-college preparation and the application process, course offerings, the role of culture in and out of the classroom, and how an education can serve the tribal community. Celebrate Black History Month with a week-long showing of the award winning PBS documentary series Eyes on the Prize. The film series documents the African American Civil Rights struggle from 1954 to 1985.

"ALCAN"

12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. in the Carwein Auditorium

This film chronicles the building of the Alaskan Canadian Highway. It documents how 5,000 African American soldiers were sent into the frozen Alaskan tundra to construct a 1,500 mile military road. The film also reveals how the ALCAN project displaced Native peoples from their homes and forced African American soldiers to work in dangerous winter conditions without adequate shelter or supplies.

Join the discussion with members of Seattle’s Freedom Socialist Party as they answer the question, “Is Obama a Socialist?”
