What is EMBRACE?
Modeled after the MLI program at Pierce College, EMBRACE stands for Educating Myself for Better Racial Awareness and Cultural Enrichment. There are three components to the EMBRACE Program, which are described below:
EMBRACE Workshop Series
This yearly series of stand-alone workshops will be offered to all members of the campus community; topics can include culture and gender sensitivity, multiracial identity, racism, classism, heterosexism, age discrimination, religious diversity, disabled populations, and other topics that are pertinent to diverse populations. Presenters will include various UWT faculty and staff, and other invited speakers who have expertise with these topics.
EMBRACE Leadership Program
The EMBRACE Leadership Program is a year-long leadership development program that will provide students with an in-depth understanding about issues pertaining to a range of diverse populations, and prepare them to engage in more complex conversations about diversity. Students will also develop valuable leadership skills in program planning and implementation, communicating a vision, and working on a team. Participants will earn an EMBRACE Leadership certificate upon completion of all program components.
Components include:
- Diversity workshops: Attendance at a minimum of 6 EMBRACE workshops throughout the year
- Leadership development
- Workshop on leadership development within a multicultural context
- Planning and leading one DRC event of their choice (eg: book discussion, ESL or Spanish language chat, etc.), or designing their own event/project
- Serving on the planning team for UWT’s Multicultural Week, sponsored by the DRC, in spring quarter
- Community engagement: Service-learning component, which involves discussion of issues affecting diverse populations, as well as volunteering at a multicultural community agency of their choice (can be combined with student organization community service hours) – 10 hours per quarter
- EMBRACE Leadership Certificate: Participants will earn an EMBRACE Leadership certificate upon completion of all program components.
EMBRACE Council
The EMBRACE Council serves as an umbrella entity that enables student organizations to work together on projects and initiatives that promote cross-cultural awareness and dialogue. The Council will also enable students to learn about the organizational opportunities available to them such as student unions, clubs and student-led organizations. A major project of the Council will be to organize the UWT Multicultural Week, to be held in Spring quarter.
Students can join the Council as representatives of their current student organization, or utilize it as a gateway to the student organizations that they may choose to affiliate with in the future. Standing Council members will include the ASUWT Multicultural Affairs chair, and the Student Activities Board Director of Social Issues.
