What is EMBRACE?
Modeled after the MLI program at Pierce College, EMBRACE stands for Educating Myself for Better Racial Awareness and Cultural Enrichment. There are two components to the EMBRACE program:
EMBRACE Workshop Series
Through an interactive learning process, EMBRACE participants delve into complex topics about a wide variety of equity, diversity, and social justice issues.
For Spring Quarter 2013, two sessions are offered for UW Tacoma students, staff, and faculty. Each session will comprise a 12-member cohort. Cohort A typically meets on Wednesday evenings from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. while cohort B typically meets from 1 - 3 p.m. on Fridays. Space is limited, so register today to participate in one of the two cohorts.
EMBRACE sessions are held in the Diversity Resource Center, WCG 104. The dates and titles of the sessions are listed below for your review and consideration:

In order to earn your EMBRACE certificate you must commit to actively participating in five of the six sessions, engage in a minimum of three hours of service-learning and complete a cumulative self-identity project.

EMBRACE Leadership Program
The EMBRACE Leadership Program is a year-long leadership development program that will provide students with an in-depth understanding about issues pertaining to a range of diverse populations, and prepare them to engage in more complex conversations about diversity. Students will also develop valuable leadership skills in program planning and implementation, communicating a vision, and working on a team. Participants will earn an EMBRACE Leadership certificate upon completion of all program components.
Components include:
- Diversity workshops: Attendance at a minimum of 6 EMBRACE workshops throughout the year
- Leadership development
- Workshop on leadership development within a multicultural context
- Planning and leading one DRC event of their choice (eg: book discussion, ESL or Spanish language chat, etc.), or designing their own event/project
- Serving on the planning team for UWT’s Multicultural Week, sponsored by the DRC, in spring quarter
- Community engagement: Service-learning component, which involves discussion of issues affecting diverse populations, as well as volunteering at a multicultural community agency of their choice (can be combined with student organization community service hours) – 10 hours per quarter
- EMBRACE Leadership Certificate: Participants will earn an EMBRACE Leadership certificate upon completion of all program components.
