Dr. José Rios Awarded UW Presidential Faculty Development Fellowship

The intent of the Presidential Faculty Development Fellowship Program is to provide promising assistant professors more opportunities to focus on improving their teaching or research portfolios. Assistant professors from throughout the UW are eligible to be nominated for the fellowship support if they are between their third and fifth year of faculty service, so competition is very keen. President McCormick appointed just five Presidential Faculty Development Fellows this year, and Dr. Rios is the first from UWT to be awarded.

José's research will focus on:

  • Practicing teachers' perceptions of the Washington Essential Academic Learning Requirements in science;
  • The connections between these standards and curriculum planning;
  • How practicing teachers address the standards in classroom instruction;
  • The factors that impede or facilitate the integration of these standards into science instruction.
