M.Ed. Graduation Requirements

The following information will provide graduate students in the Education Program, Tacoma, with essential graduation requirements and procedures. Students are expected to contact the Education Program Office for the most current information. Please note that the information in the UW General Catalog supersedes the information on this page. It is your responsibility, as a student, to see that all requirements of the Graduate School and the Education Program at UWT are met. 1. Graduation Requirements Checklist

It is the responsibility of each master's candidate to meet the following Graduate School minimum requirements:

  • Satisfy the degree requirements that are in force at the time the degree is to be awarded.
  • Complete a minimum of 45 quarter credits (special education requires 49) of coursework applicable to the Master of Education degree.
  • Register as a graduate student at the University of Washington, Tacoma, during the quarter you plan to complete the degree. Students must be registered for, and successfully complete, a minimum of two quarter credits during the quarter in which the degree is to be conferred.
  • Remove any X, N, or I grades posted on your transcript for courses needed to satisfy degree requirements. (If the two-year limit to remove I grades has passed, you must retake the course/s if required for the degree).
  • Have a grade of 2.7 or better on all coursework used to satisfy degree requirements, and a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
  • Complete Graduate School coursework requirements including residency requirements as stipulated in the General Catalog. The following are minimum Graduate School requirements:
    • 18 UWT credits at the 500-level and above
    • 18 UWT credits of graded courses at the 400-level or above
    • Residency requirements
  • Complete all coursework, including approved petitioned courses, within a six-year time period. Transfer credits must have prior approval.
  • Fulfill all requirements of the final Culminating Experience.
    • Students completing the Project Pathway must submit a bound copy of the Final Project as partial fulfillment of the Culminating Experience due in the Education Program Office, WCG-324.
    • Students completing the Practicum Pathway must pass the Comprehensive Examination as partial fulfillment of the Culminating Experience.

    2. Master's Degree Request (applying for the M.Ed. degree)

    You are required to apply for the master's degree online. The secure site will ask you for your UW NetID and password. The request period begins Monday, the third week of each quarter and closes Friday (midnight Pacific Time), the second week of the subsequent quarter (the quarter you intend to graduate). If you do not complete your degree in the requested quarter, you must complete another degree request for the quarter in which you expect to complete degree requirements. You must also register as a graduate student and complete a minimum of two credits during the quarter in which degree requirements are met and the degree is conferred.

    3. Course of Study Form

    Download the online Course of Study form. You should include courses you will take during your last quarter. Identify transfer courses on the form only if you have an approved petition on file. Remember to keep a copy of the form for yourself. The completed form must be typed only and submitted to your advisor in the Education Program Office, WCG-324.

    4. Commencement

    The University of Washington, Tacoma, Commencement will be held on Friday, June 13, 2008. Click here for important information and instructions. You must complete the online Commencement Registration Form by the published deadline.
