If you have completed at least 40 college-level credits at the time of application after leaving high school, you should apply as a transfer student. If you have completed college credit while in high school (Running Start or College in the High School), you should apply as a freshman.
What is required to transfer to UW Tacoma?
Transfer students are most often admitted directly to a degree program.
In order to be considered for admission to an academic program, you must meet
the minimum requirements set by the program. You will be required to submit
transcripts from every college you have attended, as well as high school transcripts
if you fulfilled the foreign language or math requirement in high school.
All programs also require an essay as part of the application. Other application
requirements will vary by program.
How many credits do I need to be eligible to transfer?
Transfer students must have completed a minimum of 40 college-level credits in order to be considered for admission to the University. The minimum number of credits required for admission directly to individual academic programs varies.
Do I need to submit SAT or ACT scores?
No. UW Tacoma does not consider SAT or ACT scores when evaluating transfer applications.
Do I need to have completed an associate degree to apply?
An associate degree satisfies UW Tacoma general admission requirements for transfer students, but is not required. Students with an associate degree from a Washington State community college and a minimum 2.75 GPA are guaranteed general admission to UW Tacoma. An associate’s degree may not, however, satisfy all prerequisites for individual degree programs. It is best to meet with an adviser early to plan your course of study.
Review the general guidelines for transferable credit or look up the courses you have completed in the University of Washington's online course equivalency database. You can also make an appointment with an admissions adviser to review your transcripts by calling (253) 692-4742.
I attended college 20 years ago. Are my credits still transferable?
In most cases, yes. There are no time limitations on most credits used to satisfy admission requirements. Some prerequisite classes (usually in math or science) must have been completed within the last five years. An admissions adviser can help you evaluate your existing college credits.
My previous college used a semester system. How do I convert my semester credits to quarter credits?
One semester credit is equivalent to 1.5 quarter credits. Therefore, a 3-semester-credit course is equivalent to 4.5 quarter credits, and 60 semester credits are equivalent to 90 quarter credits.
Can I attend part time?
Most academic programs offer a part-time option. Check with an academic adviser for more information.
Where can I find student housing?
UW Tacoma does not currently offer student housing. There are, however, a variety of housing options within a short distance from campus. Resources like www.apartmentfinder.com and www.rent.net are helpful.
Since UW Tacoma is accepting freshman now, will there be less space for transfer students?
Absolutely not. UW Tacoma remains committed to serving transfer students
and the majority of UW Tacoma's students will continue to transfer from local
community colleges. The freshman class makes up about 10% of the student body at UW Tacoma.
