Placement Testing Overview

To study math or Spanish at UW Tacoma, you must take an placement test first. Placement tests are not "pass/fail" tests; they simply assess your skill level so you can be enrolled in the appropriate course.

Spanish courses can be important for students who want to major or minor in international business or Hispanic studies or students who need to fulfill their foreign language requirement. If you have never taken any Spanish course and intend to enroll in Spanish 101, you do not need take a placement test.

Math courses are important for students who are planning math-intensive majors including programs in the natural sciences, engineering, computer science and business administration.
