Spanish Placement Test
Students who intend to take a Spanish language course at UW Tacoma may need to take a placement test to be placed into the appropriate level course.
You need to take the Spanish placement exam if you:
- Have taken one year or more of Spanish in high school
- Have taken any Spanish at the college level
- Speak Spanish at home, are a bilingual or heritage speaker of the language
You do not need to take the exam if you:
- Have never taken a Spanish class and intend to enroll in Spanish 101 (TSPAN 101) at UW Tacoma
- Have an AP score of 3 or higher
- Do not intend to enroll in a Spanish language course at UW Tacoma
Taking the Spanish Placement Test
The Spanish placement test is offered by appointment only. Please call the General Education Center to schedule testing at (253) 692-4740.
There is a $25 fee for the placement test that must be paid in advance. Payment can be made by phone with a credit or debit card by calling (253) 692-4669, or in person at the Cashier’s Office in MAT 354. If payment is made in person, please bring a copy of the receipt to the testing session to verify payment.
On the date of the test, bring photo identification along with your receipt if the fee was paid in person.
How the test works
The UW Tacoma Spanish placement test is a one-hour, timed test. The first section of the test is an audio exam, the second section is multiple choice. It will be 7 - 10 days before the test results are available.
