Accolades

You are not only working hard in Global Honors, you are busy volunteering, racking up scholarships and awards, working, serving on committees, raising children, working and more!

Juniors

Cameron Neblett volunteers as the Cherry Parkes compost runner for UWT's pilot Campus Composting Program.

Seniors

Elizabeth Austin will spend Spring 2009 in London through study abroad. Shortly after, she will venture to Ghana for an additional study abroad.

Maren Alaine is the Cherry Parkes compost volunteer for UWT's composting pilot program. She will study abroad in India this summer.

Patrick Fuhrman received a Global Honors Tuition Waiver Scholarship for this academic year. He volunteers at the New Heart Worship Center in Auburn as the Media Director of NXG Youth Group.

Emy Johnston is currently the Student Representative on the Global Honors Advisory Board. For her study abroad in Brazil last summer she was awarded a $5,000 scholarship through Go!Global.

Anna Kojevnikova, originally from Moldova, is a Next Step Scholarship recipient and is currently an Executive Team Leader Intern at Target.

Sarah Lee is a member of UWT's Philosophy Roundtable. Since her admittance to UWT as a freshman, she has volunteered with the Tacoma Rescue Mission and Habitat for Humanity.

Christopher Pilch is a husky promise student and received a scholarship from UWT. He is also a member of Boy Scouts of America. This summer, Christopher will study international law in Ireland.

Meagan Murphy Ross placed first in the Global Honors Tuition Scholarship competition in Autumn 2007. Congratulations! She also facilitates a reading group for the Olympia Senior Center. In Spring 2008, Meagan was selected to serve as a journalist intern in Moscow, Russia. On top of all of her achievements, she recently became a mother.

Alumni

Samantha Adams is very involved with CIVITAS, the Urban Studies organization on campus. She spear-headed the effort for faculty to share their research with the campus at-large. Recently, Yonn Dierwechter presented his latest published research. Sam is a double major in Urban Studies and IAS, Global Honors, and CIVITAS obligations, Sam is also a wonderful mother. Sam is the first student to complete the Global Honors program in only one year.

Jazarae Heinzman came to UWT as a Running Start student. In the 2007-2008 academic year she was on the Dean's list every quarter. She was also the recipient of GH study abroad scholarship along with a scholarship from the International Programs Office at UWT for her studies in Cuernavaca, Mexico this summer. She is also a current member of the Latino Student Organization.

Rachel Hug is currently the ACLU secretary, a member of Campus Crusade for Christ & Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship, the vice president of the Latino Student Organization and a member of the Student Labor Action Project. Rachel designed an individual research/volunteer program abroad in Peru during the summer of 2008. She has also been on the Dean's list every term since Autumn 2007. Recently, Rachel became a representative of Student Labor Action Project.

Joel Kady is Tahoma West's Poetry Lead Editor. He received a GH tuition scholarship and also a $10,000 William Jefferson Clinton Scholarship to study in Dubai in Autumn 08. He will return to Dubai after graduation to pursue a career in finance.

Ciara O'Connell is currently the ACLU President and the Tacoma campus Tau Sigma Honor Society Ambassador. She received a GH study abroad scholarship for her studies in Ireland. Ciara will begin graduate studies at the Irish Center for Human Rights after graduation.

Bonnie Rico graduated in Autumn 2008 and will walk with her Global Honors peer this spring. While at UWT, she served as a Peer Advisor and an after-school tutor at Bryant Montessori. Bonnie was appointed to the UWT Student Senate and was a member of ACLU, civil liberties, and TIOS, a free speech organization. Bonnie was also nominated as an outstanding student leader of an organization. Bonnie was the recipient of UWT's Gift of Service award in 2008. For her study abroad in India, summer 2008, Bonnie received a Gilman award.

Christopher Thomas has had the opportunity to conduct undergraduate research in two African countries while studying Environmental Studies at UW Tacoma. He recently returned from Kenya where he served as a research assistant for Professor John "Buck" Banks. In the Summer of 2008, he participated in the UW Seattle Honors study abroad program in Sierra-Leone. He received two study abroad scholarships, UW International Programs & Exchanges Study Abroad Scholarship - Sierra Leone and UWT Fuchs Scholarship. He was able to utilize his research on the complex issue of sustainable rice farming for his Global Honors thesis.

Christopher has also contributed to the academic community as a guest lecturer at the University of Puget Sound. In summer 2008 he presented at the Ecology Society of America conference. Recently, he was asked to write a book review for the Pacific Northwest Quarterly on the book "Greenscapes: Olmsted's Pacific Northwest" by Joan Hockaday. In January 2010, he will tele-present his research in Sierra-Leone at a sustainability conference in Ecuador. In addition, he served on the IAS Director Search Committee.

As a junior, Christopher held a Leiendecker Scholarship, as well as an All Washington Academic Scholarship. He was a mentor for "Earthy Conversations," sponsored by the Chambers Creek Foundation and Pierce County, an organization charged collecting thoughts, ideas, plans, and dreams for transforming 928 acres of property in University Place into "an experiential and environmental opportunity for this and future generations." All the while, he has made the Dean's list each term at UWT.

Julie Turley is a Next Step Scholarship recipient, was on the Dean's List all three quarters of her junior year as well as the annual list. For study abroad in Ireland she received a UWT Int'l Programs scholarship, a Global Honors scholarship, and the Fritz Scholarship from UW Seattle Int'l Programs & Exchanges. Julie is a PASS (Personal Academic Student Support) mentor as part of the Communities In Schools of Federal Way organization. Julie was recently nominated for the Chancellor's Medal.

Kylene Yumul is fluent in Filipino, English, and Spanish. She served in the US Army in Iraq and was awarded a Distinguished Leadership Award, Soldier of the Year Award, and Distinguished Honor Graduate in a military school, among others. She has been on the Dean's List every quarter and currently volunteers at the Tacoma Art Museum and The Nature Conservancy. Kylene also tutors middle school and high school students though Centro Latino and is a Peace Corps nominee for natural resources conservation programs in Latin America. After graduation she will serve in South America through the Peace Corps.
