Curriculum

The Global Honors curriculum is designed to develop advanced critical thinking, writing and analytical skills. Topics are approached from an interdisciplinary perspective and vary depending on the expertise of the professor and the interests of the students. Classes are conducted in a seminar format and may include presentations, individual or group projects and writing and critiquing of papers. Students are expected to maintain an overall GPA of 3.50 in all coursework at UW Tacoma.

Sophomore-level Course (not required)
Spring 2008 Global Honors will offer an introductory course, "Maps - of the World and the Mind," to interested sophomores and freshmen. This course will introduce students to the interdisciplinary and international approaches of Global Honors at UWT. Contact Tanya (tanyau@u.washington.edu) today to see how Global Honors will fit into your academic plan. Syllabus

NOTE: A minimum 3.5 GPA is normally required but students who have less than that may ask about admission to the class - tanyau@u.washington.edu.

Junior-Year Curriculum
In the junior year, students take one Global Honors seminar per quarter along with the coursework in their major. Each course spans broadly across disciplines; it's this interdisciplinarity that gives Global Honors students' education at UW Tacoma great depth and breadth, complementing their work in their regular major.
Senior-Year Curriculum
Seniors in Global Honors take a 2-credit Research Methods seminar in the fall, which prepares them to research, develop, and complete their senior thesis or paper under the guidance of a faculty adviser. All seniors give presentations of their work at the spring Research Colloquium.
Study Abroad
Students are encouraged to study in another country, preferably for one full quarter, for a minimum of three weeks.
Students who study abroad may substitute the senior reflection paper for the thesis as their capstone project. Those who do not study abroad are required to write a Global Honors thesis.
The study abroad experience may occur during the junior year, during the summer before fall quarter begins or during fall quarter of the senior year. A minimum of five credits must be earned during the study abroad program. Students are required to share their study abroad experience at a Global Honors event in the fall.
