Curriculum
The curriculum and requirements have been crafted to heighten your awareness of the interconnections and interdependencies of today’s world. Taught by stellar professors from programs across the campus, core seminars focus on the mutually beneficial possibilities of global and local partnerships as well as the structural, environmental, and cultural challenges posed by an interlocked system.
Perhaps most importantly for life-long learning, Global Honors broadens your education by bringing together academically diverse students and professors. The stimulating community of Global Honors aims to impart intellectual depth, broad perspectives, and excellence to your undergraduate experience.
Students are expected to maintain an overall GPA of 3.50 in all coursework at UW Tacoma.
How will Global Honors fit into your major requirements? Model course plans
- Junior-Year Curriculum
- In the junior year, students take one Global Honors seminar per quarter along with the coursework in their major. Each course spans broadly across disciplines; it's this interdisciplinarity that gives Global Honors students' education at UW Tacoma great depth and breadth, complementing their work in their regular major.
- Senior-Year Curriculum
- Seniors in Global Honors take a 2-credit Research Methods seminar in the fall, which prepares them to research, develop, and complete their senior thesis or paper under the guidance of a faculty adviser. All seniors give presentations of their work at the spring Research Colloquium.
- Lecture Engagement
- Attendance at a minimum of two lectures required over the course of each year in the Global Honors Program (for a minimum total of 4 lectures).
- Study Abroad (not required, strongly encouraged)
- Students are encouraged to study in another country, preferably for one full quarter, for a minimum of three weeks.
- Students who study abroad may substitute the senior reflection paper for the thesis as their capstone project. Those who do not study abroad are required to write a Global Honors thesis.
- The study abroad experience may occur during the junior year, during the summer before fall quarter begins or during fall quarter of the senior year. A minimum of five credits must be earned during the study abroad program. Students are required to share their study abroad experience at a Global Honors event in the fall.
