Financing Study Abroad

Financial Aid packages are determined on the projected yearly cost of tuition and fees, room and board, books, personal expenses, and transportation. In-state students need about $6,356 per term to cover normal on-campus expenses. Annual undergraduate student budget examples

Study Abroad programs strive to make their fees comparable to the above stated budget. For example, a term long program to Cuba is $4,500. The student is responsible for airfare and personal spending money, which vary by lifestyle and program site. Since financial aid (loans, grants and scholarships) can be applied to study abroad programs, there is less extra money needed than most students realize. The many scholarships available for students who wish to experience our world can easily fill that gap. Also, while studying abroad, students earn UWT credit and are therefore making academic progress toward graduation.

Scholarships

Global Honors students will be eligible for limited scholarship funds to help toward travel and tuition. More information is available in the Global Honors office in Cherry Parkes 311C.

In addition, UW Tacoma and other organizations offer several scholarships that can help cover tuition.

Additional Costs

Flight

The cost of the flight is not included in the study abroad program fee. Therefore, it is wise to look for flights early. STA Travel is an agency that might be helpful.

Passport

Apply for a passport as soon as possible; sometimes it takes longer than expected to process. http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738_2.html

Shots

Some destinations will require vaccines and medication. This local clinic provides information and shots for travel abroad. http://www.passporthealthwa.com

Study Abroad Insurance

United HealthCare Insurance Company, University of Washington

Currently, medical insurance is not required to study abroad but, it is a good idea to have it while you are in another country. Unaffiliated study abroad programs may require insurance, however. The University of Washington has made medical insurance while abroad very accessible ($34 a month).
