- IAS Faculty and Staff Honored
- IAS would like to congratulate Dr. Jim Gawel, Dr. Claudia Gorbman and Bridget Mason for winning the following awards. Dr.Gorbman is the recipient of the Distinguished Research Award for 2009 and will be honored along with Bridget on May 19th at the campus recognition event hosted by the Chancellor’s Office. UW Tacoma and IAS are very fortunate to have a scholar of Dr. Gorbman's quality, and we congratulate her on this award. Bridget Mason will be honored for winning the Distinguished Service Award (DSA). Bridget, who is the Instructional Lab Coordinator in Environmental Science, was selected for her enthusiasm, organization and commitment to IAS and the Environmental Science program. CONGRATULATIONS TO EACH OF YOU!!!
- Search Success: IAS Announces the New Director, Dr. Larry Knopp
- Dr. Larry Knopp has accepted the position as Director of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences. His excellent professional interpersonal skills and fair-minded leadership ability make him an excellent fit for our IAS Program. Larry is currently the Professor of Geography at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) and Associate Dean for UMD programs of the University of Minnesota Graduate School. He also holds Adjunct and Graduate Faculty appointments at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and an Affiliate Professor appointment at the University of Washington Seattle. At UMD he served six years as Head of the Department of Geography, 12 years as Director of the interdisciplinary Center for Community and Regional Research, and 10 years as Coordinator of the interdisciplinary Urban and Regional Studies program. He also contributes to his campus's programs in Cultural Studies, International Studies, Women's Studies, and Liberal Studies. His scholarship is focused on issues of cultural politics and space, particularly in relation to issues of sexuality, gender, and class. Larry replaces Dr. Cheryl Greengrove, who is stepping down this year after three years as Interim Director of IAS. Luckily for us, Cheryl will remain at UWT as a faculty member. Cheryl's vitality, vision, and determination have been critical supports for faculty, staff, and students in the IAS Program, and for the institution as a whole. We welcome Larry into his new role and thank Cheryl for three years of exceptional leadership.
