Michael Forman, Ph.D.

Michael Forman is Associate Professor of Social and Political Theory, Human Rights, and Labor Studies. His teaching and research interests span the areas of modern European culture and ideas, critical theory, and political economy. He teaches courses about the history of European and American political theory and thought, the Enlightenment, human rights, feminist thought, philosophy of social science, world civilization, labor and politics, and globalization. His current research focuses on the emergence and transformation of modern ideas and ideals of progress, political change, and social justice. He has published articles on Latin American literature, political science, liberalism, socialism, and critical theory. His book, Nationalism and the International Labor Movement: The Idea of the Nation in Socialist and Anarchist Theory (PennState University Press, 1998), received the Michael Harrington Award in 1999. He is editor of Critical Social Theory in America: A Reader (forthcoming from Rowman and Littlefield). He is affiliated with the University of Washington’s Center for Labor Studies, the Center for the Study of Community and Society, and the Human Rights Network.
