Claudia Gorbman is a professor of film studies at UWT, and an adjunct faculty member in UW-Seattle's Cinema Studies and Women Studies programs. She is the author of Unheard Melodies: Narrative Film Music (1987), has translated six books including five by the French critic Michel Chion, and she has published more than fifty articles on film and film music. She came to UWT as a founding faculty member after fifteen years in Comparative Literature at Indiana University. She received the UWT Distinguished Scholar Award for 2009.
She served as Director of UWT's Global Honors Program from 2006 to 2009.

Her courses range from film history, to national and area cinemas, to auteur studies, to genres, movements and topics (e.g., the French New Wave, women directors, black directors, film and politics, narrative, sound).
