My teaching and research focuses geographically on Asia and the Pacific as seen in the context of reflexive Western understandings of those regions. Conceptually it focuses on the limitations and explanatory power of the concept of culture, especially as a lens for questioning public, physical forms, like temple architecture, manufactured commodities, paintings, advertisements, and the diverse, taken-for-granted "realities" that their material forms presuppose.
