Science Research at UWT
May 2006—On May 31st, Cheryl Greengrove and her team of students were profiled in The Tacoma News Tribune. Toxic algae thrive in harbor bed is the article featuring exciting information about the science research being conducted at UWT. Great work!
Establishing Institutional Links
May 2006—Anthony D'Costa has been invited as a Senior Visiting Scholar by the Centre for Technology, Innovation and Culture at the University of Oslo and by the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies in Copenhagen for two months. In addition to working on a collaborative project in Oslo, he will present lectures to Norwegian and Danish universities and government institutes. Also, on behalf of the South Asian Studies Program, UWS, he will be establishing institutional links.
Congratulations, Dr. Michael Allen
May 2007 —Congratulations to Mike Allen for publishing a new book, The Confederation Congress and Creation of the American Trans-Appalachian Settlement Policy, 1783-1787 (Mellen Press, 2006). To find out more information on the book visit the publisher's web site: Mellen Press.
Luther Adams Receives Postdoctoral Fellowship
April 2006 —Luther Adams has been awarded a postdoctoral fellowship in the Center for African-American Urban Studies and the Economy at Carnegie Mellon University for 2006-07. Luther will be at Carnegie Mellon for the entire year, and will conduct further research on his project dealing with African-American migration to Louisville between the Great Depression and the 1970s. This fellowship is an important recognition of the work he has done, and the work he has yet to do. Congratulations, Dr. Adams!
Chasing the Dream
April 2006 —Michael Honey's article, "Chasing the Dream," ran in the Editorials/Opinion section of The Seattle Times on Sunday, April 2nd. On Thursday, March 30th, Rob Crawford's article, "Abuse puts soul of our nation at risk," ran in the Commentary section of the The Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Winter Quarter 2006

Rachel May receives Fullbright Grant
Mar 2006—Rachel May has received a Fulbright grant for next fall. She will be lecturing and conducting research with the Oral History Program at the University of Buenos Aires. She is likely to be teaching a graduate seminar on Central America while there. Congratulations, Dr. May!
Distinguished Teaching Award
Mar 2006—Cheryl Greengrove has been selected as the UW Tacoma's Distinguished Teaching Award recipient for 2006! This year, students who nominated Dr. Greengrove said her exceptional commitment to science and teaching has been instrumental to the success of the Environmental Science Program. Cheryl has helped develop opportunities for students to perform marine field research aboard ships, and to present their findings at local meetings, UW undergraduate research symposia, Puget Sound research conferences and national ocean sciences meetings.
Cheryl will be honored at the UWT Founders Day ceremony, at the UW Recognition Ceremony in Seattle, and at the UWT commencement. She will also receive a $5,000 award provided by the office of the president. Congratulations, Dr. Greengrove!
Congratulations to Nominees
Feb 2006—Given annually, the Distinguished Teaching Award is a $5,000 award designated to honor one exemplary professor at UWT. The award recipient is recognized at the UW Seattle awards ceremony and the UWT Founders Day ceremony in May. Drs. Cheryl Greengrove, Michael Kucher, Rachel May and Johann Reusch are excellent examples of the high-quality faculty in IAS. Congratulations on your nominations!
—The University of Washington, Tacoma Distinguished Research Award was initiated in 2004. The purpose of this award is to recognize a faculty member who has achieved a record of notable scholarship or creative activity, who has generated new knowledge or creativity that impacts their intellectual discipline, and who has contributed to the intellectual climate of the UWT campus and its communities. Congratulations on your nomination, Dr. D'Costa!
Mystery Book Night
Jan 2006—On January 26, between 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., Beth Kalikoff, author of Dying for a Blue Plate Special, signed copies of her book as part of the King Book continuing fundraising series for the Scholars and Champions Association, a nonprofit organization that raises money for the Tacoma Public Schools. As part of this Mystery Book Night, Patricia Harrington, author of Death Stalks the Khmer, was also available to sign her books.

Autumn Quarter 2005

D'Costa with students in CubaTechnology, Globalization and Development
Dec 2005—Anthony D'Costa's first volume in his edited series, "Technology, Globalization and Development," is now out. It is titled "Political Economy and Information Capitalism in India: Digital Divide, Development and Equity" edited by Govindan Parayil from the University of Oslo. Dr. D'Costa's essay is titled "ICTs and Decoupled Development: Theories, Trajectories and Transitions." Currently, Dr. D'Costa is editing the second volume which is entitled: "The New Economy in Development: ICT Opportunities and Challenges" (forthcoming 2006).
Dr. West Honored
Oct 2005—Carolyn West is honored as the first holder of the Bartley Dobb Professorship for the Prevention of Violence. This Professorship will support Dr. West's work for the next three years, and it will consist of additional funding to help support her work on the prevention of family violence. Congratulations Dr. West!
Distinguished Northwest Writer
Oct 2005—Peter Bacho will be discussing and reading from his latest novel, Entrys, on October 19th in the Bookstore at 6:30 p.m. Peter was recently named Distinguished Northwest Writer in Residence at Seattle University. Two of his works have won American Book Awards from the Before Columbus Foundation. Entrys is his fourth novel which tells the story of a nineteen-year-old "Indipino" (half Yakima Indian, half Filipino) wounded in the Vietnam War.

Oct 2005—An article by Robert Crawford, "The tarnish of torture," appeared in the Editorials/Opinions section of The Seattle Times on Tuesday, October 18th.
