About the Center

The Center for Urban Waters is a partnership between the City of Tacoma's Environmental Services Division, the University of Washington Tacoma, and the state agency, Puget Sound Partnership. The new facility will be located on the Thea Foss Waterway. The City's Environmental Services Division labs and offices, UW Tacoma research labs, and a Puget Sound Partnership office will all be located in this new 48,500 square foot building slated for completion in April 2010.

The UW Tacoma will conduct marine research and Professor and Port of Tacoma Chair, Dr. Joel Baker, will serve as scientific adviser for the Urban Waters marine research center. Initially, this research will include: Ballast water and invasive species, urban water run-off and marine biotechnology, and aquaculture.

Similar to projects on the UW Tacoma Campus, the Center for Urban Waters is being built LEED certified. The goal for this project is a platinum LEED certification.
