Code of Conduct

Welcome to the UWT Library. You are welcome to use the UWT Library’s information resources and services for purposes of research and learning. UWT Library staff seek to provide services and facilities that support and foster the free flow of learning, information-gathering, and other related activities. Library users are expected to respect the rights of others, the integrity of library resources, and the mission, policies, and regulations of the UWT Library.

Individuals will:

• Use email or Internet resources within the guidelines of the UWT Computer Use Policies
• Adhere to policies governing appropriate use of University identification, i.e. not allow others to use their UW identification or UWT NetID
• Comply with circulation policies
• Respond to emergency and security alarms and other situations as instructed by Library staff
• Leave the building at closing time
• Limit use of the Library to authorized areas
• Use cell phones in designated areas only

Behaviors that infringe upon the rights of library users or staff are prohibited. Prohibited activities and behaviors include, but are not limited to, the following.

Individuals will not:

• Exhibit behavior that contributes to excessive noise levels, such as loud talking, shouting, screaming, making other loud noises, using cell phones in a loud manner or in undesignated areas
• Deface or damage Library materials including, but not limited to, underlining, highlighting, writing, using sticky notes or paper clips, removing pages or security devices
• Misuse, misappropriate, or damage Library furniture, buildings, or equipment, including computer systems
• Disturb others with strong odors, e.g. perfumes, alcohol, or unsanitary personal conditions
• Consume beverages in open containers or food
• Bring animals, with the exception of service animals, into the Library
• Allow children to be disruptive or unsupervised
• Exhibit any threatening or intimidating behaviors, e.g. abusive language, threats of violence or harassment, carrying or displaying weapons
• Engage in behavior that is potentially unsafe or harmful to self or others
• Vend, peddle, solicit, or petition in the Library; post or distribute materials without permission
• Use alcohol, tobacco, or controlled substances
• Leave personal belongings unattended

Responses to non-compliance:

UWT Library staff or Security Officers may ask a user to stop non-compliant behavior. If UWT Library staff or Security Officers believe a library user is in violation of this Library Code of Conduct, they may ask the user to allow a search of backpacks or bags. Violators may face disciplinary sanctions or legal action in accordance with applicable policies and laws.

Federal and Washington State laws, local regulations, and UWT policies apply within the UWT Library. In addition the UWT Library has written policies on Library Security and Computer Use.
