Interviews and dramatic readings by such actors as Robert Duvall, Josh Lucas, Beau Bridges, Blair Underwood, Justin , Aaron Eckhart, Chris Gorham, and John Krasinski, transform selections from this collection of writing into a deep examination of the experiences of the men and women who are serving in America's armed forces. At the same time the film provides depth and context to these experiences through a broader look at the universal themes of war literature. The writing in Operation Homecoming covers the full spectrum -- poetry, fiction, memoir, letters, journals, and essays. The stories recounted here are sad, funny, violent, and uplifting. Rivers to the Sea: Ernest Hemingway – DVD TAC-1897
More than 40 years after his death, Hemingway is one of the most widely read, and widely written about American authors. His distinct style and profound influence are indisputable; his larger-than-life persona is still the stuff of heated debate. As well known in his lifetime as any movie star, Hemingway was a dashing international figure who challenged the notion that writers exist in an ivory tower. There were the battles, the bull fights, the big game, the booze-and he channeled these experiences into stark prose, creating a new form of expression, describing action and emotion in simple, authentic terms. An enormous critical success, his major works – The Old Man and the Sea, A Farewell to Arms, The Sun Also Rises, For Whom the Bell Tolls – are still in print, some in as many as 20 languages. The recent excitement over Cuba's release of their Hemingway collection is unmatched in modern literature. It is the literature, it is the written word and the art of Hemingway's storytelling that forms the heart and the freshness of this film, the point of departure from which Hemingway's life and work are uniquely explored.

Footage of 1994 congressional hearings, in which tobacco industry representatives attempt to defend their actions and their product, are interspersed with clips from vintage Hollywood films, in which the likes of John Wayne, Bette Davis, and Burt Lancaster enjoy a smoke with no small enthusiasm, and television commercials from the 1950s and 1960s, in which the "smooth," "clean," "fresh" tastes of various cigarettes are praised.
