Wolfe, J.R., Strange, C.C. (2003). Academic Life at the Franchise: Faculty culture in a rural two-year branch campus. Review of Higher Education 26(3), 343-362.

John Wolf, Director of Academic and Instructional Services at Wright State University's Lake Campus, and Carney Strange, Professor of Higher Education and Student Affairs at Bowling Green State University, wrote about their study of a 2-year branch campus located in a rural area of a populous Midwestern state. The study investigates faculty life and culture, including responsibilities and working conditions, socialization, attitudes, values, expectations, and work satisfaction. The article provides the history of the campus and its relationship with the university, explains how the sample of seven faculty members was selected, and describes the qualitative research techniques employed. Most of the article discusses four themes: institutional culture; campus size; faculty role perception; and the relative success of branch campus faculty. Each observation is supported by quotations from the participants. A lengthy discussion on gender inequity (there are only two female! faculty members) and the resulting effects on faculty and students is provided. The authors include comments on the campus' size and how the participants believe the small size contributes to greater job complexity; faculty becoming generalists rather than specialists; professional isolation; and less collegiality. The role of faculty on the branch campus is described as teaching first, followed by community service, and then research; faculty opinions are provided. The section on faculty success identifies that advancement is dependent on discipline (those in a technical field are at a disadvantage); professional credentials (whether or not a terminal degree has been earned); and employment status (full-time compared to part-time). Under the Discussion and Conclusion section, other reports that raise questions about the status of higher education are listed. The authors claim that while this branch campus reflects the best of what academia has to offer, the negative aspects may outweigh the benefits for those faculty that consider professional advancement as critical. The authors also said that this type of 2-year branch campus represents the fastest growing sector in higher education and will most likely have the greatest need for faculty in the future. They recommend that steps be taken to ensure that the need is fulfilled and that studies of small branch campuses be continued. Seventeen references are included. --Annotation by Allison King, Brevard Community College/University of Central Florida Joint-Use Library Cocoa
