Distinguished Research Award

Dr. Charles Emlet, associate professor of Social Work and the winner of the first UWT Distinguished Research Award, will discuss his work on AIDS and aging at a special lecture Wednesday.'

Emlet's presentation, "Aging and HIV/AIDS: Lessons Learned...Moving Forward" begins at 12:45 p.m. in Carwein Auditorium on the UWT campus. A reception will follow the lecture.

In 2004, UWT honored Emlet with the new award, which recognizes a faculty member for exemplary research in his or her field of study.

Emlet's research focuses on older people with HIV/AIDS, international programs for older people and issues related to substance abuse in the elderly. He was recently named an affiliate faculty member with the UW Center for AIDS research and served as a Hartford Geriatric Social Work Faculty Scholar from 2001 to 2003. He is co-author of "In-Home Assessment of Older Adults: An Interdisciplinary Approach" (Aspen Publishers, 1996 and 2005) and recently edited the book, "HIV/AIDS and Older Adults: Challenges for Individuals, Families and Communities" (Springer, 2004).

Emlet has authored over 35 journal articles and book chapters and is a member of the board of directors for the National Association on HIV over 50 and the Governor's Council on HIV/AIDS.
