Course Related Instruction

Course-Specific Sessions

We schedule sessions for specific classes based on faculty requests. During these sessions, librarians discuss resources pertinent to a specific assignment and focus on search strategies, including (but not limited to) how to use library resources to develop a topic, how to approach subject heading and keyword searching using Boolean connectors in an online environment, and how to evaluate resources (including evaluation of Web sites).

Classes may be conducted in the library for classes of 12 or fewer students, in your classroom, or in the computer classroom (limited by size and availability), whichever is most appropriate. Please request sessions at least two weeks in
advance
to allow librarians appropriate time to prepare.

Course-Integrated Instruction

Course-integrated library instruction provides an opportunity for faculty and librarians to develop an intensive research component for a class. Librarians typically present 3-4 in-class workshops of flexible length on topics related to research. In conjunction with the lectures, librarians structure one or more library related assignments to illustrate the various stages of the research process. Librarians are especially willing to work with a faculty-designed assignment (e.g. a research paper or annotated source list) and develop related exercises that support and assess students' research strategies as they complete such an assignment. There are many possibilities for developing such a class and we would be very glad to talk to you more about it.

General Orientations & Library Learning Sessions

Each quarter, the Tacoma Campus Library offers general orientations and library learning sessions to help students become familiar with the library's services and resources. These sessions include tours of the library, overviews of resources pertinent to different subject areas, instruction on using the library's online databases to find books and articles on specific topics, and introductions to searching full-text databases and navigating the World Wide Web.
