Crossing film screening

Longshoreman's Hall

The UW Tacoma chapter of the HOPE Network presents the film Crossing, based on a real story about a North Korean defector who crosses illegally into China to get medicine for his dying wife. The story shares the hardship of North Korean refugees in the late 1990s, when famine killed an estimated 1 million people. The HOPE Network is dedicated to raising student awareness of international human rights by providing an environment where students can learn about human rights abuses throughout the world. Clay Power, a representative of LiNK (Liberty in North Korea), is the guest speaker. LiNK raises awareness about human rights and humanitarian issues in North Korea. Dr. Eas S. Easwaran, assistant professor at Pacific Lutheran University in the Computer Science and Computer Engineering program, presents "Seed Growing for Data Clustering and Number of Clusters Determination," the first of a series of lectures hosted by UW Tacoma's Institute of Technology in this annual spring seminar.

Cluster analysis techniques are becoming increasingly important due to the rapid growth in size and variety of datasets being collected and stored electronically. These data collection efforts have brought about a need for extracting valuable information from this large collection of data via cluster analysis. Cluster technology is used in many fields, including computer science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics, mathematics, biological sciences and geology. Veterans Fundraiser

A panel of veterans, veteran family members and veteran resource representatives will share their experiences and talk about resources available to veterans and their families. A short clip of the movie, The Corporal's Diary, about the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq of Corp. Jonathan Santos, will be shown. Santos's mother, Doris Kent, will be a special guest. A raffle will be held to raise funds for Veterans Independent Enterprises of Washington (VIEW), which helps disabled and homeless veterans by providing work and adjustment training, work therapy, job placement services, transitional employment and transitional housing. Financial Reporting Conference 2009

Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center, 1500 Broadway

The UW Tacoma Milgard School of Business and the UW Seattle Michael G. Foster School of Business will co-host the Fifth Annual Financial Reporting Conference. This conference brings together accounting standard setters, enforcement officials, corporate financial executives, and professional and academic accountants to discuss current issues in financial accounting and corporate reporting.

The keynote speaker is Greg J. Stark, managing director of Russell Investment Group. Other speakers include Tom Linsmeier, Financial Accounting Standards Board member; and James Kroeker, deputy chief accountant for the Securities and Exchange Commission. Panelists include Ed Drosdick, partner in Moss Adams LLP; Hal Strong, former CFO of Russell Investments; Carlene Merlino, senior manager, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, New York; UW finance and business economics faculty member Karma Hadjimichalakis; and UW business graduate student Urooj Khan. Cathy Shakespeare, assistant professor of business at the University of Michigan, is also a panelist.
