Pierce County Councilmember Dick Muri and performance audit coordinator for Pierce County Council Matt Temmel will give a presentation titled "Performance audits and their role in public policy making: What's all the noise about?" Muri and Temmel are two of several key political speakers who will present as part of the Navigating Public Policy program offered by the University of Washington Tacoma KeyBank Professional Development Center. The last in a series of three public discussions on the future of urban design in Tacoma, this talk will focus on sustainability and green building practices as exemplified in the Center for Urban Waters, an environmental research facility now under construction on the Thea Foss Waterway. Retired CIA analyst Ray McGovern will present a lecture, "Does torture work? Let's have both sides of the story." McGovern, a frequently featured guest of radio and TV political coverage, is a co-founder of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity, an organization formed to contest U.S. government claims about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. Free event, open to the public.

The tenth annual technology showcase will bring together regional leaders from industry, education and government to discuss innovations in technology. Speakers include UW Tacoma Chancellor Patricia Spakes, UW Tacoma Assistant Director of Industry Partnerships Andrew Fry, Congressman Adam Smith, Congressman Norm Dicks and Institute of Technology Director Dr. Orlando Baiocchi. The conference is free to attendees, but registration is highly recommended.
