Lizeth Garcia, '13, has been named a 2015-16 Fulbright English Teaching Assistant.

Lizeth Garcia, '13, UW Tacoma Fulbright scholarLizeth Garcia, a 2013 graduate of the Politics, Policy and Economics program in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences, has been named a 2015-16 Fulbright English Teaching Assistant. She will develop and lead language classes at a Brazilian teachers’ college.

She is the first in her family to graduate from college, and she is the first UW Tacoma student to achieve the honor of a Fulbright award.

Since graduating, Lizeth has served as a legislative aide with the King County Council. She gained experience that served her well at the County Council while still a student, when she went through UW Tacoma’s state legislative internship program, during the 2013 legislative session. She worked for Sen. Joe Fain of the 47th legislative district (Auburn, Kent, Covington, Renton).

Lizeth has also contributed to the community as a volunteer, with organizations such as Para Los Niños--a community organization that provides school readiness and English-as-a-second-language programs in South King County school districts—and Boys & Girls Clubs of King County. She serves as a board member for the Trade Development Alliance of Greater Seattle.

The Fulbright Program for U.S. Students is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Government. It was created in 1946 when Pres. Harry S Truman signed a bill sponsored by Sen. J. William Fulbright to fund the “promotion of international good will through the exchange of students in the fields of education, culture, and science.”

Currently, the program awards about 1,900 grants annually to students throughout the U.S.  It’s active in more than 150 other countries as well, bringing international students to the U.S., such as Daniel Kristiyanto from Indonesia, who is studying computer science at UW Tacoma (see our story “Fulbright scholar chooses Tacoma to launch his dreams”).

Lizeth is one of a number of UW Tacoma students who’ve gained recognition at the national level this year. Read more stories on our Student Fellowships & Awards web site.
