“Reflections on Urban Renewal,”
7 p.m., Keystone Auditorium. UW Education Professor Gene
Edgar and Madrona School Principal Rickie Malone will discuss
their four-year effort to improve the quality of education
for all children at Seattle’s Madrona elementary school.
This is the first of three lectures on urban education sponsored
by UWT’s Center for the Study of Education and Poverty.

Auditorium. Greenfield, a sought-after cosultant and doctoral
student at the UW and a member of the faculty at Highline
Community College, will discuss cultural diversity and self-empowerment.

will address common behavior styles and examine skills for
effectively communicating with others.

South Sound College Fair, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., UWT
campus. Potential students of all ages are invited to explore
the tremendous range of educational programs and services
offered by more than a dozen public colleges and universities
at this regional college fair. Enjoy free workshops, entertainment
and tours and meet with representatives from all UWT programs,
public Washington colleges and universities offering programs
in the South Sound.

2B opening: Latest UWT buildings continue district revitalization

Several
hundred people crowded into the new UWT student center to witness
ribbon-cutting ceremonies for the newly renovated Mattress Factory
and Cherry Parkes buildings.
In
speeches before the ribbon-cutting, UW President Lee Huntsman,
U.S. Rep. Adam Smith and Tacoma Mayor Bill Baarsma congratulated
UWT on the completion of Phase 2B. Chancellor Vicky Carwein, ASUWT
President Mark Dodson and Lease Crutcher Lewis principal Kurt
Hildebrand also spoke at the event. (Lease Crutcher Lewis was
the general contractor for Phase 2B.)
Hildebrand
complimented the design team and architects.
“This
was the best-partnered project I’ve seen in 20 years,”
he said.
Several
offices and academic programs will move into the new space this
year. Facilities, ASUWT and the Office of Student Life have already
moved into Mattress Factory; Career Services, Alumni Relations,
Media Services and other offices will follow this month. The Nursing
program is scheduled to move into Cherry Parkes in January. Computer
Services has moved from leased space in the Harmon building to
Walsh Gardner.
Business
Leadership Award recipients named
Seven
businesspeople have been chosen to receive Business Leadership
Awards Jan. 28 at a ceremony honoring local business leaders and
sponsored by the Milgard School of Business, Heritage Bank and
the Business Examiner Newspaper Group.
The
award winners were nominated by members of the community and selected
based on criteria including 2003 accomplishments, strategic thinking,
integrated business knowledge, teamwork, professionalism and communication.
One of the seven honorees will be named Business Leader of the
Year. A Rising Star award and Lifetime Achievement award will
also be given.
The
2003 Business Leadership Award recipients are Melanie Dressel,
CEO of Columbia Bank; John A. Hall, president and CEO of Rainier
Pacific Bank; Don Johnson, president and general manager of Simpson
Tacoma Kraft; Andrea Riniker, executive director of the Port of
Tacoma; Randy Rushforth, president of Rushforth Construction Inc.;
Linda Thomas, executive director of Gordon, Thomas, Honeywell,
Malanca, Peterson & Daheim LLP; and Janeanne Upp, executive
director of the Tacoma Art Museum.
UW
Tacoma and the Business Examiner established the Business Leadership
Awards three years ago. They were designed to recognize the achievements
of Pierce County business leaders and strengthen the relationship
between UWT and the business community.

ASUWT
moves, works on constitution, childcare, health care
ASUWT
has a packed agenda this quarter with the move to new headquarters
in the Mattress Factory Student Center and a wide range of other
work.
ASUWT
is beginning phase two of “Reconstruction” this quarter
with an eye toward creating UWT's first Declaration of Students
Rights in addition to a new draft of the ASUWT Constitution, to
be presented to the students Spring quarter for ratification.
ASUWT’s
Childcare Committee has been gathering student opinion and working
with administration to ensure that students' needs are met while
keeping costs down for this pilot program.
ASUWT's
Health Care Taskforce, its newest committee, spent the better
part of fall quarter polling students and discussing the resulting
opinion data to develop a plan to provide students with access
to low-cost health care.

Aquiling has joined the finance office as grants coordinator.
Leslie
Anderson has joined the Office of Development and Alumni
Relations as development and special event coordinator.
Gary
Comfort (Finance), special assistant to the vice chancellor
for Finance and Administration, retired Dec. 31. Comfort, a 20-year
UW employee, had worked at UWT since January 1999.
Gabriela
Crosby has joined the Social Work program as an office
assistant.
Jennifer
Burley has joined the Institute of Technology as a temporary
office assistant. She is filling in for Lorna Fernandez, who is
on family leave.
Dawn
Hanna has joined the Institute of Technology as a temporary
administrative coordinator. She is filling in for Carmelita Calo,
who is on family leave.
Adam
Hobart has joined the UWT Library as a library technician.
A
classical CD produced by Kim Davenport (IAS)
and her father was featured among the top five classical CDs for
holiday gifts in the Dec. 7 edition of The News Tribune.
“Vienna, Prague, Moscow, Tacoma: Music from the Heart”
was recorded by Kim (piano) and her father Michael (bass clarinet).
The Davenports were performing in Vienna when the TNT article
appeared.
