Phase 2B opening: Latest UWT buildings continue district revitalization

ASUWT officers Jacquelyn Davis, April Bodnar, Mark Dodson and Carmela Amador cut the ribbon outside the Mattress Factory building with Chancellor Vicky Carwein (right).

Several hundred people crowded into the new UWT student center to witness ribbon-cutting ceremonies for the newly renovated Mattress Factory and Cherry Parkes buildings.

In speeches before the ribbon-cutting, UW President Lee Huntsman, U.S. Rep. Adam Smith and Tacoma Mayor Bill Baarsma congratulated UWT on the completion of Phase 2B. Chancellor Vicky Carwein, ASUWT President Mark Dodson and Lease Crutcher Lewis principal Kurt Hildebrand also spoke at the event. (Lease Crutcher Lewis was the general contractor for Phase 2B.)

Hildebrand complimented the design team and architects.

“This was the best-partnered project I’ve seen in 20 years,” he said.

Several offices and academic programs will move into the new space this year. Facilities, ASUWT and the Office of Student Life have already moved into Mattress Factory; Career Services, Alumni Relations, Media Services and other offices will follow this month. The Nursing program is scheduled to move into Cherry Parkes in January. Computer Services has moved from leased space in the Harmon building to Walsh Gardner.

ASUWT moves, works on constitution, childcare, health care

ASUWT has a packed agenda this quarter with the move to new headquarters in the Mattress Factory Student Center and a wide range of other work.

ASUWT is beginning phase two of “Reconstruction” this quarter with an eye toward creating UWT's first Declaration of Students Rights in addition to a new draft of the ASUWT Constitution, to be presented to the students Spring quarter for ratification.

ASUWT’s Childcare Committee has been gathering student opinion and working with administration to ensure that students' needs are met while keeping costs down for this pilot program.

ASUWT's Health Care Taskforce, its newest committee, spent the better part of fall quarter polling students and discussing the resulting opinion data to develop a plan to provide students with access to low-cost health care.
