The Excellence in Academic Libraries award will be on display in the UWT library through the end of the year. The award, which recognizes the top university research library in North America and is the highest honor an academic library can achieve, was given to the entire University of Washington libraries systems in May. University Libraries Director Betsy Wilson attended a reception at the library Dec. 13. Dale Goodvin's photo of the "Chinook Red" chandelier is featured on one of several banners one of several banners that have been designed in recognition of the award. The banners have been displayed along Stevens Way on the Seattle campus, and the banner featuring the chandelier is now on display in the UWT library with the award.

Chancellor search nearing conclusion

The five finalists seeking to become UWT's next chancellor have completed their campus visits and presented their ideas about the future of UW Tacoma.

The search committee, co-chaired by UWT Education director Ginger MacDonald, has reviewed feedback from the campus and community and come to consensus about the top candidates. UW President Mark Emmert will make the final hiring decision.

HEC board considers future of upper-division campuses

The report on the future of UW Tacoma is now in the hands of the Higher Education Coordinating Board.

The UWT report and similar proposals for growth at UW Bothell, Washington State University Vancouver and WSU Tri-Cities were submitted to the HECB Dec. 10 in response to recent legislation aimed at clarifying the evolution of the upper-division campuses. Following its Jan. 27 meeting, the board will make recommendations to the Legislature.

Last month, the UW Board of Regents enthusiastically endorsed the UWT report, which calls for tripling enrollment by 2014 to meet rapidly growing demand for higher education. If recommendations in the report are implemented, UW Tacoma will grow from its current enrollment of about 2,000 to more than 6,000 over the next 10 years, including about 4,000 new seats for transfer students and a small-scale, four-year baccalaureate program. The first freshmen would be admitted in 2006.

New art on its way to Cherry Parkes

Seven new artworks by Fall City artist Don Fels, including this piece, "Trinkets," will be installed in the Cherry Parkes building early next month. The UWT Art Committee, working with the Washington State Arts Commission, recently acquired this artwork, which was created by signpainting collectives in Kerala, India, based on concepts and schematic designs by Fels.
