Happy holidays

A student hung these decorative ornaments on a tree outside of the UW Tacoma Library last week as part of an art project. For more holiday cheer featuring UW Tacoma, check out this promotional video from Tacoma’s Rusty George Creative.

Martin Luther King Day: Days of service

UW Tacoma staff, faculty and students can commemorate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in January by participating in Days of Service activities organized by the Diversity Resource Center.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, a national event sponsored by the Corporation  for National and Community Service, was designed as a way to transform Dr. King’s life and teachings into service that helps solve social problems and bring Americans together to strengthen their communities. UW Tacoma schedules service events over several days to accommodate student schedules.

UW Tacoma’s Days of Service start Saturday, Jan. 19 and run through Friday, Jan. 25. Project sites this year include Habitat for Humanity, St. Leo’s Food Connection, Rainbow Center, Pierce County AIDS Foundation, Metro Parks Tacoma and more. Registration will begin Jan. 3.

Gospel star to sing at MLK Day event

Crystal Aikin, the local singer who gained national fame this month as winner of BET’s “Sunday Best” gospel music competition, will perform at UW Tacoma’s Martin Luther King Day Unity Breakfast Jan. 21.

Carl Mack, executive director of the National Society of Black Engineers, will be the keynote speaker at the second-annual breakfast, which will be held this year at the Longshoremen’s Hall. Tickets will be $15 for the community, $10 for UW Tacoma students and $5 for children under 10. Seating is very limited; reserve a seat through the Diversity Resource Center by Jan. 14.

Aikin, who is an emergency room nurse at St. Joseph Medical Center, won a recording contract, a new car and $300,000 earmarked for community involvement as part of the singing contest Dec. 4. She was selected from among thousands of contestants to compete on the reality show.

Heidelberg building may be torn down

Heidelberg buildingThe old Columbia-Heidelberg Brewery near UW Tacoma may be torn down to make way for a 160-room hotel.

The owners of the old brewery, located at 2102 S. C St., have applied for a demolition permit and met with the Landmarks Preservation Commission to discuss preliminary plans for a seven- or eight-story Holiday Inn or Holiday Inn Express on the site. They hope to tear down the northern two-thirds of the brewery block.

The hotel has not yet been approved by the Preservation Commission, which will likely require that the new building blend with the surrounding historic district, which includes UW Tacoma, and incorporate some of the brewery’s iconic features.

The 75-year-old brewery complex is a mix of buildings constructed between 1932 and 1954. It has had a succession of owners, starting with the Columbia Brewing Co., and in the 1950s was the largest brewery west of the Mississippi River and north of San Francisco. The brewery closed in 1979.

Faculty member earns Fulbright

Associate Professor Katie Baird (IAS) has earned a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture on economics and perform research on education policy at the University of Pais Vasco in Bilbao, Spain, this winter.

“Spain is fascinating, and the Basque Country is a particularly interesting part of it,” she said via e-mail from Bilbao. “In many ways, UPV reminds me of UW Tacoma—it is relatively new, experimenting with different programs, and trying to find its niche in a competitive environment.”

Baird relocated to Spain with her husband and two children this quarter. She says her family is slowly adjusting to living out of the country.

“Moving a family of four to a foreign country has been quite exhausting,” she said. “Hopefully the worst is behind us, though, and we can begin taking advantage of this great opportunity.”

Baird is one of 800 U.S. scholars to be awarded the prestigious grant this year.
