Patricia Spakes named chancellor of UWT

Patricia Spakes

President Mark Emmert announced last week that he has named Patricia Spakes, vice president and provost of Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, to be the next chancellor of UW Tacoma. Dr Spakes was selected after a national search to replace Vicky Carwein, now president of Westfield State College, in Massachusetts. She will begin work in April.

In an e-mail to the UWT campus, Emmert said Dr. Spakes articulated a strong vision and understanding of the factors that will shape UWT's future and inspired confidence and excitement among faculty, staff, students and community leaders.

Emmert also recognized Steven Olswang for strong leadership of UWT as interim chancellor for the past nine months. Dr. Olswang will continue to serve as Interim Chancellor until Dr. Spakes arrives.

Ginger MacDonald, director of the Education program and co-chair of the search committee, said she appreciated the involvement of staff, faculty, students and the community in the selection process.

"We had such strong participation across the board," she said. "So many people came and evaluated all of the candidates."

She also recognized the search committee, which included staff, faculty, students and community members from the Tacoma, Seattle and Bothell campuses.

"The members of the committee really seemed to care about UWT, even if they were from Seattle or Bothell. This process went on for a year, but everyone was dedicated to seeing it through."

Go higher at the South Sound College Fair

Volunteers are still needed to staff the South Sound College Fair, a gathering of Washington colleges and universities, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22.

For the second year in a row, UWT is coordinating and hosting the free fair, where representatives from 19 colleges and universities will meet with prospective students and offer tips on applications, financial aid, advising, degrees, continuing education and more. In addition, participants can enjoy entertainment, tour the growing UWT campus and shop at neighborhood stores and restaurants.

More than 1,000 people attended the first fair in 2004.

Coordinators are seeking staff members to help direct vehicle and foot traffic on campus during the event. For more information or to volunteer, contact Mandy Meinhardt at meinhard@u.washington.edu or Wanda Curtis at wandaec@u.washington.edu.

Business Leadership Awards to be held Jan. 26

Fifteen local businesspeople were nominated for the Business Leader of the Year award, which will be presented at the fourth-annual Business Leadership Awards event Jan. 26.

The awards, sponsored by the Milgard School of Business, Heritage Bank and the Business Examiner, honor outstanding achievement in the Pierce County market. One of the 13 nominees will be named Business Leader of the Year at the event, which begins with a reception at 5:30 p.m. at the Washington State History Museum. The ceremony begins at 7 p.m.

In addition, longtime UWT supporter Bill Philip will be given the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Deadline Jan. 21 for faculty awards, campus grant applications

Jan. 21 is the deadline for nominating faculty members for Distinguished Teaching or Distinguished Scholarship awards. It's also the application deadline for Founders' Endowment awards. Nominations and grant applications are due in the Chancellor's Office by 5 p.m. Information on the Distinguished Scholarship awards was sent to faculty members in a Jan. 6 e-mail from Jack Nelson.
