Lower-division curriculum on track

Freshmen are coming and the curriculum will be ready for them.

With more than 140 freshmen formally enrolled and the process continuing to enroll more, the 18 faculty members who will teach them have been identified and all the pieces of the curriculum are falling into place.

It hasn’t come together without a few bumps and one scare about availability of science courses. The good news is the issue was resolved. Freshmen pursuing a degree in Environmental Science or any other UW Tacoma major will have all the coursework they need to complete their degrees in four years.

Freshmen will be taught by a diverse cross-section of UW Tacoma faculty comprised of senior- and junior-level professors representing a broad range of academic disciplines.

“They’re all excellent, collaborative and inspired,” says Beth Kalikoff, associate vice chancellor for Academic Affairs.

On display now at UWT gallery: Paintings by Ryan Loiselle

This painting and more by Tacoma artist Ryan Loiselle are on display in the UWT gallery through May 12. Loiselle, a painter, graphic designer, musician, brewer and filmmaker, says he enjoys painting character and the human form in all its imperfections. He describes his painting style as “demented and revealing” and possessing the rare gift of “bringing out the worst” in his subjects. The gallery, located at 1742 Pacific Ave., is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-4 p.m. and Fridays from 1-5 p.m.

Celebrate UWT's best on May 25

Come out to honor the recipients of staff, faculty, student and community awards at the third annual Founders Day award presentation at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 25 in Carwein Auditorium.

UWT will honor former Washington Governor Booth Gardner for his support of the university since its inception. In addition, UWT will recognize the recipients of this year's distinguished teaching, research, service and alumni awards, and the Gift of Service and Rod Hagenbuch awards for students.

This year, the chancellor will also give special awards to IAS Director Bill Richardson, interim Nursing Director Sharon Fought and Charting the Future Initiative Coordinator Bob Jackson for outstanding service to UW Tacoma.

Billboard contest winner

Congratulations to Michelle Hartman (Social Work) for winning our billboard-spotting contest last month! Michelle was the first to correctly identify the exact locations of three UWT billboards. Michelle received a $5 Starbucks gift card and the (dubious) honor of having her picture in Inside Track. Thanks, Michelle!

She also figured out the identity of our forehead and arm model for the billboard: It's Shelby Fritz, of the Chancellor's Office, who's reaching high.
