Come
Together Washington on UWTV
In
a fascinating and inspiring event Oct. 15, the UW launched the
public phase of its $2 billion capital campaign at Come Together

master of ceremonies for the event, which featured a keynote address

and campaign chair Regent William H. Gates Jr.

is broadcasting the evening's program throughout November, via
cable on various channels, including 27, 68 and 90, depending
on your location and cable provider.

Giving
opportunities at UWT
In
conjunction with Campaign UW: Creating Futures, UW Tacoma's development
staff is identifying giving opportunities at UWT that will appeal
to donors and support campus objectives for academic growth and
community impact. Gifts are being sought to endow faculty chairs
and scolarships and to support initiatives such as the Japanese
Language School memorial garden and a global honors college (which
has received temporary funding through a grant from the Provost's
Office). [Carol

Dual
admission
Academic
Directors are discussing expanded options for dual admission,
which allows students to reserve a seat at UWT at the same time
that they are admitted to a participating community college. UWT
has had a dual admission program between the Institute and some
of our partner community colleges (Highline, Pierce, TCC and South
Puget Sound) for several years, but so far dual admission has
not been available to students in other UWT programs.

Commencement
Because
the Tacoma Dome is hosting an international sporting event and
will be unavailable for Commencement, UWT's June 10 graduation
ceremonies will be held at the Greater Tacoma Convention Center.
The venue is much smaller than the Dome, so the number of tickets
may have to be limited. Commencement planning meetings have begun.

Assembly
building in predesign phase
The
UW Capital and Space Planning Office and the Capital Projects
Office have retained LMN, the Seattle architectural firm that
helped design the first phases of campus construction, to prepare
predesign documents for conversion of the "Dawg Shed"
to an assembly hall for UWT. Predesign documents are required
by the Office of Financial Management in Olympia as support for
a capital appropriation request. The architects have met with
a planning committee of UWT faculty, staff and administrators
to begin to define the functional needs of the assembly hall.
The predesign was completed in mid-October to meet budget submittal
schedules. [Fred King]
