UWT enters the giving season

Winter is a season of giving at UW Tacoma.

Whether you give money, warm clothing, toys, food or just your time, your donations can bring cheer and sustenance to those who need it most. Consider making holiday donations through one of these opportunities at UW Tacoma:

UWTSA Holiday Service Project: Through Dec. 14, the UWT Staff Association is collecting donations for the Phoenix Housing Network, a local shelter for families. The shelter needs everything from food and diapers to gently-used clothing. Check out the list of items requested by the shelter and drop off your donation at one of these locations.

Combined Fund Drive: Now through Dec. 7, UWT staff and faculty can enroll in the Combined Fund Drive to give to a number of charitable organizations through one easy form. Give directly to your favorite charity—or to a specific UW Tacoma department or scholarship program—through payroll deduction. To give to the Combined Fund Drive online, visit the Giving Station and log in with your UW NetID. The Combined Fund Drive Committee is also sponsoring a food drive; participants will be entered in a raffle. Bring your donations of non-perishable food to one of these locations.

Professor appointed to science panel

Joel BakerProfessor Joel Baker, the new Port of Tacoma Chair in Environmental Science, has been appointed to the Puget Sound Partnership’s Science Panel.

Baker will join eight of the state’s top scientists on the panel, which will provide independent scientific advice to the Partnership, a new state agency established this year to lead efforts to protect and restore Puget Sound.

Baker, who will start work at UW Tacoma on Jan. 1, 2008, was hired this summer. In addition to serving on the faculty, he will lead the research arm of Urban Waters, a new 50,000 square-foot marine research center being built on the east side of the Thea Foss Waterway. Puget Sound Partnership’s offices will be located in the Urban Waters center, and UW Tacoma students and faculty, led by Baker, will play a major role in the agency’s work cleaning up Puget Sound.

Refreshing the Master Plan

The University of Washington Tacoma is launching a process to “refresh” its Master Plan for campus development to address changes that come with transforming into a four-year university.

Freshmen and sophomores have different needs than those of the transfer and graduate students UW Tacoma served exclusively during its first 17 years. Transfer students tend to come to campus for classes, then leave. Freshmen and sophomores want an active, vibrant campus life, on-campus residence halls and a range of recreational opportunities and places to hang out and study. The kinds of buildings and spaces that meet these needs work best if they are located close to the campus academic core.

In addition, the refresh will look at other issues affecting development of the campus footprint that were not anticipated in the original plan.

The process is called a refresh because a full update is not required. Master plans are commonly updated when needed, based on programmatic change and growth. UW Tacoma last updated its master plan in 2003.

An architectural firm, Mithun Architects and Designers, is supporting the master planning process with oversight by the University’s Building Advisory and Design Review Committee, chaired by Ysabel Trinidad, UW Tacoma’s vice chancellor for Finance & Administration. A series of public meetings will be held to seek input into the plan and updates will be posted regularly on a Web page dedicated to the master planning process.

Hear the Chancellor and Provost speak

ChancellorDid you miss the Provost’s Town Hall meeting or Chancellor Spakes’ annual address in October? You can still watch both from your computer:

UW North may be in Everett

A consultant has recommended downtown Everett as the best location for a the newest UW campus.

The consultant said a 32-acre site located near the city’s transit center would be the best place for a new campus to serve the North Puget Sound region. Like UW Tacoma, a downtown Everett campus would offer students the amenities of an urban location and opportunities to partner with the local community.

Gov. Gregoire and the state Legislature will make the final decision on where the new campus will be located. Interim classes at the new campus are expected to begin next fall.

Being thankful

Grab your turkey sandwich and sit back; it’s time to review our many reasons to be thankful. Usually, this is a personal endeavor. But at the UW Tacoma Library, we have lots of reasons to be thankful. We suspect that we aren’t the only ones, and so we’re going to share with everyone!
