UWT in the Community: Saving Katrina's Animals

IAS Admissions Specialist Karin Dalesky with Maggie, a yellow labrador rescued in New Orleans. After her rescue, Maggie was adopted by a friend of Dalesky's, who is also a UWT graduate student.

In this issue, Inside Track kicks off “UWT in the Community,” an occasional feature showcasing a UW Tacoma faculty or staff member who is providing extraordinary service to the community. This month, IAS Admissions Specialist Karin Dalesky tells the tale of returning to New Orleans to help care for lost and abandoned pets on the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina (read about her first trip here).

If you'd like to share your story of community service, let us know at uwtnews@u.washington.edu.

By Karin Dalesky
Special to Inside Track

When I returned from the desolate ruins of Louisiana last September, many colleagues at UW Tacoma said that what I had done was heroic. But I didn't feel much like a hero.

I had seen mile after mile of destruction, people who had lost their family members and all of their worldly possessions, and countless lost and bewildered animals that remained loose on the streets. I knew I had to go back.

Faculty endowment will support children's books

Education Professor Belinda Louie and her husband, Douglas, have established a $25,000 endowment to fund a collection of children’s books in the UW Tacoma Library. The Professor Belinda Y. Louie Children’s and Young Adult Literature Endowed Fund will allow the library to purchase books and other information for the Children’s and Young Adult Literature Collection.

In addition to the endowment, Louie has commissioned a piece of Japanese paper-cut art to hang in the library. The artist, Aki Sogabe, is a well-known children’s book illustrator from Bellevue.

A reception in Louie’s honor will be held Dec. 13 at the Library.

Any member of the UW Tacoma faculty or staff can create a named endowment through the Faculty-Staff-Retiree Campaign.

Students can pick up tickets in the General Education Center. Faculty and staff can receive their membership discount with a Husky Card. For more information, contact the General Education Center at 2-4740.

Husky Card gets smart
